Price Paid:  $400.00 at Avon Valley Cycles

Favorite Ride:
Smokey Mountain National Park

Bike Setup:
Cannondale R2000 with Shimano Ultegra components.

Summary:
Purchased this to take my training up a notch -especially dealing with typical family time constraints (2 kids). Use this in conjunction with outdoor rides and spinning classes.

Strengths:
Excellent information feedback. I also really like the fact that you can download programs other riders have done and compete against them. TACX even runs little competitions on their website for pre-developed routes. You can download them, race against the others, and upload your results. I also like being able to design my own programs. The stats you can look at and track on your PC are great as far as monitoring progression. It is nice to be able to plot your heart rate against wattage.

Weaknesses:
User manual needs to be re-written. I basically had to figure out how it works by trial and error.

Price Paid:  $60.00 at Sports Recycler

Favorite Ride:
Magnolia

Bike Setup:
Cannondale Silk Road.

Summary:
This is a review of the Trax EcoTrack rollers (which isn't listed in the Rollers category).

Strengths:
Cheap. Retails for $100, I paid $60.

Durable. I've ridden at least 2500 miles on these. Never broken anything.

The rollers work fine. You get a good workout, improve your balance etc.

Weaknesses:
Loud. Neighbors complain. The landlord fined me $36 for noise. You need to switch on the subtitles when you watch TV.

The legs are too short to use on carpet.

Plastic drums get out of true. This makes the ride unstable, hard to ride no hands. No big deal, we ride rollers (instead of trainers) to develop instinctive balance. I've never fallen off.

After my neighbors complained, I added a second belt, which smoothed the ride and increased the resistance, so I rode one gear slower. I bolted 2x4 cross-braces across the frame, and screwed two layers of anti-vibration matting to the 2x4's. This raised the rollers above the carpet. My downstairs neighbors said this greatly reduced the noise, but my nextdoor neighbor came over and complained! Somehow the vibration now goes sideways instead of down.

Don't buy these if you live in an apartment building, or if you're clumsy and fall off things. Otherwise, no reason to pay 5x the price for Kreitlers.
