Strengths: Quality welds on the frame, decent tires, attractive paint *until scratched* and high "coolness" looks factorWeaknesses: Dangerously bad steering parts quality, WallyWorld ElCheapo shock, poor components, weak rims.Bottom Line: I posted this review in the wrong place before, I wanted to make sure it was in the right place to warn people about this bad product.
This is the most disapointing bike purchase I have ever made.
My R-40 has been a lemon from Day 1, has had four trips back to the shop (so far) for warranty work.
I got the Ballistic suspension fork (they charge you two hundred dollars for a $25 WallyWorld fork).
The short story is that the bike had a defect in the steering and the bike shop didn't get it fixed in 3 attempts. When the bike wheel is pointed strait, the steering bar is crooked by a couple of inches. I have to ride down the road steering sideways.
They have tried replacing parts, shimming the fork, nothing has fixed it so far. It looks to me that there is a fundamental flaw in the design of the fork attachment, because there is no adjustment made for bad manufacturing tollerances in this el-cheapo fork.
I gave up with where I bought it, and took it to another dealer in another town and they are working on it now.
Ok, for the rest of the bike. The component group, especially the rear shifter, is junk... but I knew that going in. I have upgraded the rear der. to Shimano XT, and that helped a lot. The rims are flimsy, and I had to replace the rear one with something that could hold up better (you can't lift the bike over bumps with a recumbent). The pedals are junk, the cranks are junk, the Avid brakes are good, and then there is the seat.
The seat is is not as good as it could be, with a simple, cheap design change. I am a wide person, and fairly tall. The top of the seat digs into my back, no matter how tight I strech the webbing. If they had simply put a small outword bend in the end of the seat, this problem wouldn't exsist. I thought about having my own seat made, but the good people at Vision informed me that would void my warranty, and with as much warranty work that has had to be done on this bike, that's a real concern.
The paint is both good and bad. It's powder coated, so it looks good... and scratches VERY easy. The stickers on the side look good, but they are right where your shoes and the chain catches them, so they get torn up quickly.
The frame it's self is nicely welded, with good quality workmanship. The boom adjustment is fine.
