Strength:

incredible raw efficiency! light. awesome on hills.

Weakness:

harsh ride

i used to ride a cannondale 3.0 with 105. it was a very nice bike. i liked it a lot, but it crashed out. i just got this one. it is really different from the old one. although they are both cannondale aluminium. cad3 is so much stiffer. the difference in power transfer effiency is night and day! the bike feels solid, doesn''t give at all. it is definitely a racer. on the other hand, i am used to ride a harsh frame. but this one is even harsher than the one i had. i can get use to it alright. but if you are used to ride a soft steel or titanium frame, this one would kill you! it is STIFF! very harsh on bumps.

Strength:

Light frame and fork, Dura-Ace and Ultegra components, Rolf wheels. Loves to climb and has very quick steering. Comfortable and fast.

Weakness:

The only weakness I can find is I wanted to use a threadless fork, but since the frame came with the Coda I stuck with the threaded type.

Since I built this bike I got to put everything on it that I liked (or could afford). I have a mixture of Dura-ace and Ultegra (due to cost), but am very happy with this bike.

Love the ride, quickness and climbing ability of this bike. I'm very happy with how I've set this bike up. I find that I hardly ever have to come off the Aero bars, even when climbing. I run some pretty big gears (53/44 and 11/23) and I've had no trouble pushing this bike down or up the road. It climbs like a dream and jams even better.

It's very light, comfortable, and responsive. The carbon fork soaks up the road bumps better than I expected. I ran an aluminum fork on my old bike and thought it did a good job--NOT EVEN CLOSE! I wish the fork was threadless, but oh well, you can't have everything.

The Rolf wheels not only look cool, but seem to love to boogie. I haven't had any trouble with the skewers, spokes or truness of these. The only thing I've noticed is that when going over cattle guards real slow there's a clunk that comes out of them. The first few times I stopped and checked the wheels and didn't find anything amiss. Going over these guards at speed is no problem and no clunking, so I guess the moral to this story is "ride the bike as fast as you can and you'll love everything about it."

I recently got one of these and wasn't to sure about aluminum road bikes. Man, this thing sure doesn't ride as harsh as I thought it would. It's really comfy and for a guy with a bad back that's really important. I love the way it handles too. It's very quick on the flats and on the hills. The Ultegra gruppo works superb. Mine's a '98 but not much different from the '99. Cannondales really are a 'sweet ride'.Rich

not really a weakness, but can be considered stiff

This is a great bike at a great price for what you get.I did hit a big bump in the road and wasn't paying attention and I got launched. The road rash healed but I learned a stiff frame is good for transmitting power to the ground, but if you don't hang on at speed you could hit the ground. The bike is a dream otherwise

expensive

I didn't expect such a good offer (DM 3400) to be the best (no-comprimize) selection. The R1000-frame is one of the lightest but strong aluminium-race-frames I tested and the extras are ULTEGRA, Mavic OpenPro, Huegi, and TIME

Stiff, light and mine has a time carbon fork

Weakness:

a little harsh

I just bought mine as frame. I could never go back to a steel frame now that I've experienced the incredible power transfer you get from a Cannondale frame. The ride is not as smooth as my Colnago SL frame was but I can live with that. If I had had a bit more cash I would have gone with the CAAD4 frame which is just as smooth as steel with all the stiffness of Al. In any case I really love this bike. I'm sure my wheels prevent it from being too harsh, I imagine the stock deep dish mavics are none to comfy. I'm giving it 5 stars because I can't give 4.5 and it really is better than just 4. The CAAD4 frames are truely 5 star.

a bit flexy, headset

2000 model w/ the american flag look, cadd 4 frame. I'm 190lbs, 6'4 with the BIG 63 frame.. and for such a big frame, its flexy!! really noticeable when I tried it on my trainer, I know its comfortable riding, but I'm worried about the aluminum failing with that much flex happening.. I'm sure smaller frames are stiffer.. but it rides brilliantly, component mix is flawless except headset, giving me troubles.. first, cups not seated right.. I have a headset press (problem solved).. it started sqeaking, then slightly binding.. just lubed it up, and everything seems fine now.. will upgrade to King when possible.. but bike/frame is doing well.. looking forward to trying a century on the beast.. (4 stars for being a bit too flexy in the big frame, or it would have been 5)

Vibration, chain rub

I really regret buying this bike. The 6000 series aluminum tubing amplifies even the slightest road irregularities. It's like riding a vibrating megaphone. I thought all aluminum would ride the same, but I was wrong. I've noticed that my friends 7000 series aluminum frames with the smaller tubes deaden more of the vibration and they don't get the chain rub that I do hill climbing. I know that I'm not the only one that feels this way. I've read most of the cannondale models reviews and it seems that allot of the owners are planning to make steel the frame material of their next bike. I didn't notice any similar comments on the Trek or Specialized aluminum frames. But I go with the steel, after test riding a Voodoo Rada with stiff 853 downtube and chain stays and comfortable ride I know I don't need to be shaken to death to have good climbing and acceleration. P.S. Thank god for the carbon fiber fork!
