Strengths:    Light weight. Beautiful paint (Platinum Red with black on fork and chainstays). Excellent ride.

    Weaknesses:    Price.

    Bottom Line:
I purchased a used 200Sci in 2000 and liked it. When I was ready to build my dream bike last winter, I looked at several different models and narrowed it down to Trek and Kestrel. The geometry on Kestrel was more to my liking and I enjoy riding my 200Sci. I purchased the frame and fork w/titanium steerer and outfitted the bike with DuraAce triple, Easton seatpost, Concurs Light saddle, Richey stem/HB, King headset and Mavic wheels.
The bike is every bit as stiff and responsive as the Kestrel 200 and slightly lighter. I would have thought the ride would be the same since the geometry was the same as the 200. This was not the case. This bike has more of twang when rolling over RR intersections or irregularities in the road. Not a bad thing, just different than the 200's dull thud in the same situation. Overall a really great ride.

Strengths:    Weight. Comfort. Stiffer than SCi. Customer Service. Looks.

Weaknesses:    Paint easily chips. Not as stiff as Look or italian steel.

    Bottom Line:
    $1600FRAME $400FORK

At 15.5 lbs, this bike is plenty fast. I've had it for enough years to really love it. Handles well, very comfortable on long training rides and nothing can touch me on the hills. The paint (amber clear coat) is gorgeous in the sunlight.

In local races, this bike sprints and climbs like a banshee. It is not stiff the way the LOOK carbon bikes are; so I wonder if I'm losing power in flex. I have had a Kestrel 200 SCI and this bike is definitely stiffer than the SCI series. I mainly do 60-80 mile weekend club rides and only a dozen crits a year, so I prefer to have the comfort this frame provides instead of a harsh ride with a stiffer sprinter's frame. This bike absorbs both road "noise" and major bumps superbly.

A word about Kestrel customer service. They have been stellar. They honor their no-fault (the baggage handlers crushed it) frame replacement at retail without hesitation. A great company.

Strengths:    Light weight. Immaculate fit and finish. The frame embodies estrel's corporate philosophy: The perfect intersection of design and engineering. The unusual amber clear coating is simply amazing. At times the frame looks like a polished agate or satin, at other times it looks almost like a liquid on which the decals float--remarkable, really! the finish really comes alive under stong light. Durability and lifetime warranty.(

Weaknesses:    The seat tube stops are a bit shallow. I had to trim my 275mm USE Alien post (certainly voiding its warranty) to keep it from hitting the stops. Not a problem if you keep plenty of post exposed.

    Bottom Line:
The 300 EMS is a beautiful, and beautifully crafted, frame. I also own a 200 SCI that was purchased in 1990 and retired in favor of the 300 EMS. The 200 SCI was still in perfect working order after 10 years and 15,000+ miles and I expect the same of the 300 EMS.
