Strengths: Good value parts - Full ultegra drivetrain, Rithcy WCS stem/ handlebars/ seatpost/ wheels.Weaknesses: Very bad paint quality - chips very easily.
Stiff ride- even for a heavy guy like me...
Breaking spokes on rear Ritchy wheelBottom Line: I'v done about 5500 Km on the bike (in a year).
Overall - I like it.
I do not have a base to compare them, since they are my first road bike (have an MTB as second pair)
I am a VERY heavy rider - 115Kg (250Lbs)
So far- the frame and components are all in one piece...
Had major problem with original wheel set - Ritchy OCR - rear wheel spokes started to break after about 800Km.
After the third one broke- Shop replaced the whole wheel (under warranty) to custom built one.

Strengths: The frame is really strong. I've collided twice (to my stupidity) into the rear end of some cars. Both times the bike didn't even suffer a scatch. The first collision was quite hard. With the 2000 model I had a very bad accident that left me in hospital for weeks, the bike hardly had a scatch again.
The components are great, although the rear hub had that problem mentioned above (below?).Weaknesses: Two design problems mentioned in the summary.
The tubing running horizonally behind the crank needs a protective plate or to be pressed in like the 2000 model had. When the chain falls off and gets cought under the crank, it dents the frame very easily. This wouldn't happen with a plate or if the tubing was pressed in behind it.
Merida support is shocking.Bottom Line: I have the 2002 model of the Extreme 907. The frame on this bike is very good, although it's kind of an odd size. The height is fine, but the torso section is at least 3cm longer than it should be (it's not my fault!).
There are design problems with this bike though that would stop me from purchasing it again.
The front guides (the piece that the gear cable threads through) are brazed onto the wrong spot. They should be further back. As a result the Ultegra brake calipers kept bending and pulling out the cable from its fitting. After I reported this, apparently a bit of an excrement fight started between Shimano and Merida over whose fault it was - pointless though, it was clearly Merida's.
Another problem occurred where the thing that the rear cassette slides onto (sorry, no idea what they're called) stripped itself round. After taking that to get repaired, the bike was in the shop for three months, while another excrement fight ensued between the manufacture of the part and Merida. What eventuated was that the part was intended for a Dura Ace hub, whereas the 907 comes with Hugi hubs.
I'm not sure who was actually finally properly to blame for these issues, but one thing was clear, Merida was very unco-operative in handlin them. The last issue was only sorted out after I threatened to burn the newborn of the Merida importer into Australia!
Having said all of this, once these problems we fixed, I have since had a pretty enjoyable time with the bike.
Now, the 2000 model of this bike was fine - before it got stolen. Had no complaints about it. I do prefer the carbon forks though as they add some road suspension to the bike.
