Strengths:    Excellent ride - stiff yet compliant. Solid component set.

Weaknesses:    Paint job. Why can't they line the decals up properly?

Bottom Line:
First - this is the 2001 model year. Since cranks/wheels/etc have changed (and the frames are now built in China instead of US), this review is not necessarily applicable to newer models. Having ridden steel and aluminum bikes in the past, this aluminum/carbon fiber composite bike seems to incorporate the best of both worlds. The frame is quite stiff and light, corners and climbs excellently, yet absorbs vibrations and road shocks incredibly well. The component set (solid 105 with TTT bars/stem, Mavic 221 rims) works well enough, minus shifting complaints when under significant torque loads. Also, the "micro-adjust seatpost" is poorly designed unless one enjoys destroying seat rails.
For the list price of $1800, this bike is expensive for being equipped with a 105 component set. However, I think the excellent ride justifies the price. Since you can find this bike at significant discounts, my value rating is relevant to the price I paid ($650), not the MSRP.

Strengths:    Frame and fork. If your not riding on glass you'll want it.

Weaknesses:    Can't control the weather! but I don't think a pinnerello could either.

Bottom Line:
Amazing bike! Very comfortable and stable bike. Carbon fork and seat stays take out all the harsh effects of any surface.

Strengths:    Light, compact frame. Carbon fork and rear triangle make for a smooth ride. Awesome value.

Weaknesses:    Can't for the life of me get the chain to stop rubbing the FD while in 2-7 thru 2-9.

Bottom Line:
I purchased this bike to help my training for mountain bike racing. Also, the bike shop swapped out the 105 components to Ultegra. The bike itself is just a great value as it competes nicely with bikes 2 to 3 times the cost. Very smooth ride.

Strengths:    Well made, comfortable frame. Triple front chain rings.

Weaknesses:    Not a super lightweight

Bottom Line:
Nice ride. The carbon stays take the shock nicely. At 20.5 lbs it's not a super lightweight but fine for the price. I think the frame is worthy of upgrading components around it and I may upgrade the wheels from Mavic CXP21 to Cosmos or something similar

Any thoughts on the K2 Mod 3.0 or Mercier Serpens LTD?

Just wondering if anyone could shed any light on these two bikes. I found a K2 Mod 3.0 on ebay that was going for 600. It was 2001, and a 57cm compact. I'm 5'10 and 3/4" so    Read More »
