a Commuter
from Date Reviewed: November 22, 2005
Strengths: Value, overall ridability, solid bike, fast (I can keep up with roadie friends who do centuries on their carbon-infested $3k road bikes), great fun, don't need an auto loan to buy it.Weaknesses: Sora is so-so, but it's fine for my purposes.
Stock Jones CX tires barely lasted 750 mi, I kept them on out of laziness, but the rear was so badly worn I finally (around 900 mi) swapped it out for a WTB (same size) with a bolder treat pattern and have not noticed any difference.Bottom Line: Great bike! I needed good commuting bike, I like to go fast but needed something durable to handle potholes, gravel and occasional hardpack dirt. Cyclocross was just the thing with beefier brakes, solid frame, wider tires - a serious machine (not like shock-weakened hybrids with your cycling power going to bounce your front shock!)
This aluminum bike is reasonably light without going overboard on carbon and other materials that would pump up the price and might not handle a good jump off a curb or a bumpy section of poorly maintained bike path at 20 MPH.
Sora components OK, surely not 105's, but on the other hand, I leave this bike locked up at work and would hate to have someone rip it off for a set of high-end components. Sora still has STI set up, and with my SPD pedals, I truly love every minute of my commute. (Prior bikes - I used a mountain bike to commute, it was painful and slow. So I bought a 15 year-old Raleigh racing bike for $100 - with Shimano 105's downtube shifters, surely a Cadillac in its day - but it was heavy and slow-going, the bike had seen best days come and go.)
The first day I took this bike to work, I called my wife as soon as I arrived to tell her how much I loved the trip. You could spend double or more for marginally lighter, marginally better groupo, etc - I just think this bike is the peak of value. A great combination of price, durability, ride (and so far - after 6 mos - reliability).
Favorite Ride: Anything
Price Paid:
$775.00
Purchased At: International Bikes,
Similar Products Used: Tested:
1. Lemond Poprad (close call, ended up w/ Trek for price ($200 less) and triple front chainring - have large hill at end of my ride home.
2. C'dale cyclocross w/o disk, bike lighter, about $200 more, mix of 105 and tiagra components, almost bought it but guy at that bike store was a jerk.
Bike Setup: Stock mostly, added SPD pedals (great!) replaced Jones tires w/ WTB (when they wore out) and added Sigma Sport wireless RDS cyclocomputer from Nashbar (love it!)

of a much not noticed outstanding bike.
handling angles responce are very well
balanced, frame material gives a very quick and stiff ride in motion, and is
good for long road rides at a crusing
