Bottom Line: Recently purchased the Marin Bear Valley and it's been an excellent ride. Light and agile, but also strong. Had Manitou Magnum forks fitted, which seem to love the off-road treks and urban commutes to work. Fingers crossed, no bad issues as yet!

Strengths: you wont be going fast when the frame snapsWeaknesses: you'll go under a car when the frame snapsBottom Line: the frame snapped on mine after 4 months - 500 miles road use. it cracked on the rear stay going along to the back wheel on a weld point on both sides, i didnt see this and eventually the thick tubes around the crank suddenly snapped leaving it unrideable and miles to get back home. marin upgraded me to a 2004 mill valley and the crack developed again after 6 months in the same place on the rear stay, appauling. this bike is weak and dangerous AVOID.
there are other very similar designs by other makes that are better value, get a bike by another manufacturer that is more reliable and wont cost you in extra transport and repair (and hopefully not hospital) costs.
