Bike Setup: Leader 735R - Ultegra - Velomax Circiut
Summary: I ordered these online without trying them on. I have wide flat feet, went most of my life without shoes, and these were far to narrow for me. I tore all the hair out of my thumbs wedging me feet past the elastic openning, nike does the same thing, bad idea. Once on they were very snug and quite nice, but I got cramps and numb spots from the narrow fit. I sent them back to the nice people at Seirra Trading Outpost and got a full refund and bought be a pair of Sidi Genius 4 Mega's. They fit great, but they are not as snug on top as the Time's were. The Sidi's were also a lot smaller than the TIme's and were much easier to walk in due to a much smaller stack height up front.
Strengths: Nice snug top fit.
Price.
Weaknesses: Too narrow for me.
The yellow leather got dirty very easily.
Very high stack height, dispite the 'integrated' sole.
Hard to walk in due to the stack height.

Bike Setup: Anvil Chisel, Campagnolo Record group.
Summary: Time shoes are cheap and poorly made. The insides are shot with the padding and liner worn down to the plastic reinforcing material. Now the soles have started to fail. Compared to my old Carnac shoes these are like house slippers.
Strengths: Low stack height, and as expected perfect fit for Time pedals.
Weaknesses: Cost, poorly made. I expect to at least get two years out of a pair of shoes. These lasted only 25,000 miles.

Strengths: Well... got used to the way they look. Super stiff and the leather uppers are a welcome relief from my loosie goosie Sidi uppers.
Weaknesses: Does not work at all with Look Cx-7 pedals. When releasing it binds up somehow and will not release unless you pretend your foot is caught in a bear trap. Not sure why -don't care. It doesn't happen with my Sidis or my Shimanos.

Bike Setup: Cannondale with Ultegra, and Time Pedals.
Summary: As a junior I used Time shoes and pedals for a few years. They were the first clipless pedals/shoes I ever used. When they became too expensive for me in the mid-90's, I switched to Sidis with Look pedals. Recently I returned to Time shoes and I can't believe that I did without them for so long. Although they are expensive, their performance is worth every cent. They are so stiff that every ounce of power goes right to the pedals and you will probably see a difference immediately like I did. I found that they held my foot well, but the front strap is of little consequence. They run wider than Sidi's and I think that they run pretty accurate in their sizing. Perhaps the price is what thwarts American buyers, but honestly I feel these shoes with Time pedals are superb.
Strengths: Stiffness, foot retension and, sturdy design. Great shoes!
Weaknesses: Price. For the price you pay for these shoes you could get a set of high-end Looks with good Sidi's or Diadoras through mail order. I gotta give them a 4 for value because for the price you pay, they should play DVD movies while you ride. If you want the time sole, check out the Tri version of this shoe. It is much more affordable and has one less strap with a nice white paint job.

Summary: I believe that choosing a shoe should be a very personal decision, since every pair of feet is different, but in my case I haven't used anything as comfortable and well constructed as these. And It's also very important for a racer to have the best possible connection between your body and your equipment, and that's what you get with these shoes and Time pedals. I don't care if there is a lighter shoe or a lighter pedal out there, now that UCI limits how light a racing bike can be I am sure this is where you want the grams to be.
Strengths: Very stiff but comfortabloe sole. When used with Time pedals you get a very solid and efficient shoe/pedal bonding. Together they are the best racing set around.
Weaknesses: I wouldn't probably use them with pedals that require an adapter, that would add even more distance between the foot and the spindle than what other kind of pedals already do.
