Favorite Ride:
into the wind

Bike Setup:
flat bar w/aero bars

Summary:
After 1 year and 1500 mi., I have had no problems. I solved the rattle with a dollop of chassis grease on the pivots. (work the grease in). Overall hard to beat the set up. The lube will also slow the wear on the pins,

Strengths:
Good design, works well.

Weaknesses:
none

Price Paid:  $85.00 at Sausalito Cyclery

Favorite Ride:
Novato Cheese Factory

Bike Setup:
Trek 5200 stock

Summary:
After one of the flip down armrests fell off at 20mph in the middle of an intersection, I decided to check out the reviews here, and was amazed to find similar stories. The pin holding the armrest just fell out, allowing the entire mechanism (two springs and all) to simply fall off after only about 500 miles of use. I agree with others that the bars are very noisy on bumpy roads, and I guess all that rattling finally worked the pin loose. The faulty pins and rattling are a bummer, because I like the flip-up feature. Still, I'll probably switch to a fixed-armrest style aerobar.

Strengths:
Inexpensive, entry level alternative. Pretty comfortable

Weaknesses:
The pins holding the flip-up mechanisms together, obviously. Noise/rattling on bumpy roads when not in aero position.

Price Paid:  $40.00 at Ebay

Favorite Ride:
Raleigh 420

Bike Setup:
Updated Raleigh 420

Summary:
Wow. So much more speed. And I can push myself longer. It didn't really do it for me until I caught a scooter going uphill after a thirty-mile run. So happy. I weigh about 150, so I didn't have any problems with the hinges or the springs, and before i used it, i took advice from a few people and used lock-tite. Since this was my first experience with an aerobar, i made a few mistakes with it, one coming to mind. I was coming up to a hill, and stood up to climb...Unfortunately, i forgot i was using the aerobar. Whump, talk about crash and burn fellas. But it's a great product for beginners and light-weights.

Strengths:
speed and endurance greatly raised. Very comfortable.

Weaknesses:
Some neck muscle pain at first

Price Paid:  $99.00

Bike Setup:
'02 Specialized Allez Sport

Summary:
Flawed hinges mar an otherwise fine product. The hinge pins keep working loose on mine.

Strengths:
Flip-up pads let you use the top bar
Comfortable to use without major changes to the bike geometry or fit
Competitively priced

Weaknesses:
The hinges suck. Period.
Rattles will drive you crazy on rough roads

Price Paid:  $80.00 at Supergo

Bike Setup:
2003 Specialized Allez Comp...Stock.

Summary:
The Aerostryke is a good answer for adding an aero position to your road bike without breaking the bank or fundamentally changing the rest of your riding positions. I was in need of an aerobar for my road bike so I could also do triathlons. I settled on the Aerostryke for a few reasons: (a)It was one of the few that fit my oversize handlebars (31.8mm) (b) I thought I would appreciate the flip-up pad feature for climbing, and (c) it looked like it would offer a wide range of adjustments. Overall, I have been happy with these bars, although life with them has been less than perfect.

Strengths:
Flip-up pads leave my climbing position untouched (this is a real big plus!)
Adjustability is great
Comfortable, even for long rides in aero position
Reasonably priced
Fits standard and oversized handlebars

Weaknesses:
Poorly engineered pivot mounts--the pads pivot and are attached via 4 small steel pins. 3 of these have worked their way loose, and I don't see a decent fix. I glued them into place and I'm hoping for the best. All of my friends using the Aerostryke have had similar problems.
Fragile springs--there are 2 springs per side that return the pads to the "stowed" position, and 1 has broken on me. I have yet to replace it.
Vibration and noise--on rough roads, they will make all kinds of noise when you are not in the aero position. I have zip-tied them down when I know the roads will be rough.
