Strengths: They work as advertised. Left shifter supports trim function.Weaknesses: - it has indicators - whilst they are removable, there are no blanking plates supplied.
- they seem to be humongous next to the XTR M970 set I have on my MTB. Large shift body, and enormous shift levers. Are roadies like 1.5 times larger than MTB riders or something? WIll my bum become even bigger because of these??
- the shifter position is not adjustable! Unacceptable in 2010/11 and at this price point (advertised and priced as ultegra level).
- No instant release!
- No two way release!
- why can't they just be re-configured 2010 XT levers???Bottom Line: "Firstly, yes, it will do what it says on the tin, i.e. they are 10-speed road compatible flat-bar shifters. I have mine mounted as such, with an Ultegra 10sp group, running 53/39 up front. FWIW I'm running mine with the regular Ultegra 6600 FD (not the R770 FD Shimano say you need) and it works fine for me.
Both front and rear shifters function as advertised.
And that would be fine if it was 2003, because the design of these shifters is firmly stuck in this era:

Whilst the first 2 points I can live with, the last 4 are really unacceptable in todays market. For comparison, just look at what SRAM and Campy have for their flat bar offerings. Equally limited in range, but up to the minute I reckon.
If you are building up from scratch, and want to go Shimano, take my advice and get a 10sp mountain grouppo instead (with a road cassette if you like). If the reviews are to be believed, they will shift better too."
