Strengths:    Fast, fast, fast, uses same Dura Ace technology, without the high price, hoods are so comfortable, its almost like sticking your hand in your pants...Al Bundy style!

Weaknesses:    Not light, at 499g/pair. The useless Flight Deck add-ons makes this set clunky. Lay down the bike just ONCE and the finish is completely shot. Replacement caps/hoods very hard to find and expensive. MUST dry lube internals annually.

Bottom Line:
This review is for the final revision of Shimano's 6500 Ultegra series 9-speed line, the Ultegra ST-6510. Last produced in 2007, these Flight Deck compatible shifters(avoid them!) are lightning-fast, with the exact same mechanicals as Shimano Dura Ace ST-7700.

However, gone are the ability to sweep three whole gears in one long shift. No biggie- I like one gear at a time best anyways. Compared to Shimano Sora, you get a defined shift with less than half the lever travel. In fact, its SO FAST- your chain will go into the desired cog even before your finger leaves the lever!

For those looking to move up from lower grade shifter groups, the Ultegra 6510 is a far worthier upgrade than Shimano 105 iteslf. Thanks to eBay, you can get these used for CHEAP.

Last and only produced in 2007- the 6510 STI brifters are the best value for 9-speed drivetrains. Until you decide you need 10 gears...this is really the BEST of its kind...hands down!

Strengths:    - Excellent, crisp, precise shifting
- Good ergonomics
- Better mechanics than their predecessors
- Good (but not very good) looks

Weaknesses:    - Very sensitive finish. The slightest touch of a rough surface is enough to scratch them, especially the plastic caps.
- Can only downshift one gear at a time

Bottom Line:
These shifters do an excellent job. Shimano improved them a lot over the previous ST-6500s - it takes less effort and less motion to shift, the shifting is more precise and the 6500's infamous unwillingness to upshift when the small lever is accidentally touched is gone.
On the downside, they scratch incredibly easily. Leaning the bike to a wall is a bad idea, as you'll scratch the shifters once they touch it. This shouldn't happen with a top-notch product like this.
