Description
The K-Force is a marvel because it goes where Shimano fears to tread: Its arms and spider use monocoque carbon fiber construction to keep weight to a minimum and even though it's made from carbon, you...

Price Paid:  $200.00 at Black Mountain Bicyc

Favorite Ride:
Swami's Sat

Bike Setup:
07 Tarmac Pro

Summary:
Constant creaking, slipping, loss of power. The finish lasts maybe 6 months under normal usage and sunny socal weather. The bottom bracket and crank system is trash. I've never heard so many complaints from one BB/Crankset at all my local bikeshops. Please save your money and mental energy and go with a tried and true Shimano.

Strengths:
None

Weaknesses:
Finicky construction, false weight claims.

Price Paid:  $425.00 at eBay

Favorite Ride:
All of them!

Bike Setup:
Masi Gran Corsa, Campy Record Ultra

Summary:
After giving this crankset a good thrashing over the last couple years I have to say it's pretty doggone good. Not as smooth shifting as a Campy set, but the 100gm savings makes it workable and worth figuring out the finesse part. Very stiff! Very solid power transfer...in fact, the weak link here is the bottom bracket shell and not the cranks. The chain rings are stiff as well and the teeth are as they were when new, even after a good 12,000 miles. If you want a solid performer, these are a good choice for a relatively inexpensive crankset.

Strengths:
Super stiff; super light; cool factor.

Weaknesses:
Takes a while to figure out the proper shifting modulation but worth the trouble. Typical annoying carbon crank creak.

Price Paid:  $0.00 at Colorado Cyclist

Bike Setup:
Litespeed ultimate. 15lbs.

Summary:
Last week, while out on a ride, the insert that the pedal screws into on my FSA Stronglight crank arm, somehow "shfted" making my pedal rotation not smooth and in line. Up until that untimely mishap, I had been quite pleased with the crankset. I happen to live in Washington State, fairly close to where FSA headquarters are. So, I removed the left crank arm and headed to their office. I went in and ended up coming to the desk of Chad H. I showed him the crank arm and he looked at it. He asked me when I purchased it and I told him I thought it was around june of '07. Initially, that's basically all he asked. He went out of the office with the crank arm and came back with it a few minutes later and gave it to me. He said for me to send him the entire crankset with BB. He asked a few more questions (my address, bike I ride, etc.) and gave me an order number.
To tell you the truth I wasn't sure if it was covered by the warranty, but he didn't seem to make it an issue. So, I went home and two days later dropped by the office and gave him the bb and crankset. A few days later UPS dropped of a new SL-K light with built in BB. I like "light, quality" components and this system is lighter than what I had before. I was blown away at how trusting, courteous and helpful Chad and the staff at FSA were/are. Since I didn't have a receipt for the original cranks FSA went strictly on my word. That means a lot to me and I hope that point registers with anyone who reads this. They sent with the cranks a catalogue of new components that they sell and I plan to buy a number of them because I want to support their quality of business. The new cranks look great and look forward to wearing them out.

Strengths:
Light, well made, looks great. Well worth the money even with the issue I experienced. (I've ridden and raced for 24 years and everything eventually wears out...second law of Quantum Physics)

Weaknesses:
In some Stronglight cranks there might be an inherent weakness in the pedal screw insert. But I believe FSA has dealt with the issue with integrity and professionalism.
