at bicyclechemistry.com Summary: The WCS double is a fine crankset, performing on a par with the Shimano Ultegra FC-6500, but with some weight savings. Perfectly placed pins make shifting up a breeze. Strengths: I upgraded an FC-5500 105 level crankset to the WCS. The drivetrain was immediately stiffer and quieter; the machined rings are less prone to clanking and the pins are more optimally placed.
The associated octalink splined bottom bracket - (not a Ritchey product but a Shimano one) - is easy to install and has
a very stiff spindle. Weaknesses: The weaknesses of the WCS double crank are only really apparent when comparing to integrated spindle units that have emerged in the Shimano 7800-6600, Taiwanese GXP, and Campagnolo Ultra-Torque era. The Octalink BB is an endangered species and the BB-5500 in particular is susceptible to right hand side seal grit infiltration noise. Similar Products Used: Shimano Ultegra, Campagnolo Daytona - Centaur.
