    Strengths:    Super Durable

    Weaknesses:    Super Heavy

    Bottom Line:
The Sora kit came with the bike in 2004 - been used continuouslly 2~3 times a week and seem to haves lasted and lasted. Changed the steel chain rings in the early days for hardened alloy, the levers, shifters cranks seem to have survived everything. Regularly chew cassettes, chains and cables but think that is normal. What surprises me is that with an accurate adjustment & a greased chain they still shift really well after all these years!

Strengths:    Good value. For a low end crankset, Sora is durable and works just fine.

Weaknesses:    Heavy. Not the best choice for racers, or other situations where low weight is a premium.

    Bottom Line:
Just thought I'd add another review to affirm what's been written about these cranks. They're are durable, functional, and fairly heavy. If you're going to buy new cranks, this isn't the set to buy, but for commuters and tourers, if these are stock on your bike there's no reason to change. I have 2001 Trek XO cyclocross bike I use for commuting and light touring, and these cranks work fine. A little heavy, but for touring and commuting, that doesn't really matter. The rear derailleur and cassette is wearing out (I'm in the process of replacing them), but after three years the cranks show only moderate wear, and appear to be good for at least several hundred more miles.

Strengths:    Really durable steel rings with Shimano's ramps and pickup pins
    Wears great...Shifts well
Quality is superb compared with most (now common) cheap n cheesy factory branded cranks

    Weaknesses:    Heavy
    Decal wore off

    Bottom Line:
This is a crank that will only be loved by someone looking for total functionality and durability...yep...it's heavy but the three steel rings wear like...well...steel..

I have over 10,000 commuting miles on mine and just had to change the middle ring..the others have alot farther to go

It's a great crank for commuters or tourers who are really going to put on the wear, in all weather, where weight is not a concern

Strengths:    in defence to these cranks they are built like tanks, will probably stand the test of time, they shift well too.

Weaknesses:    heavy as a boat anchor, don't buy it if your concerned with bike weight.

    Bottom Line:
This crankset came with my bike but I quickly swapped it out for a 2002 Ultegra Hollowtech crankset. The Difference is between night & day. The Ultegra weighs at least 1/2 of the Sora. I recently repacked my bottom bracket on my old 20 year old Nishiki International. Even these 20yr. old Sugino cranks weigh a lot less !! they weigh the same as my new Ultegra!! unbelievable how Shimano can create crap like these new Sora cranks that cannot even rival 20 yr. old cranks, sheesh! In retrospect, I would have been better off buying the older 10 yr. old Shimano 600 cranks instead of buying the new Ultegra cranks. They weigh the same. I came upon some for 60 bucks. So in conclusion, if you're upgrading, look at old used bike stores or sport swap stores, look for the Shimano 600 cranks and you won't be sorry. There's no use shelling out over 200 dollars for the newer lighter cranks.

Strengths:    good looks, nice polished finish, excellent fit and finish quality for an inexpensive crankset, also it is pretty strong and has very little flex.

Weaknesses:    it,s pretty heavy(975g)and the chainrings are steel.

    Bottom Line:
If you don,t have a lot of money to spend, this is a nice crankset,(cost,s less than half that of 105)or,if it ,s on your bike it,s more than adequate, the only thing wrong with this setup is the steel chainrings that account for half the heavy weight, but for the money, these are smooth shifting durable cranks that should last a while.
