Product Description

The Omnium Track Crank is the first external bearing track crank in the world. The Omnium is designed for all-out Velodrome racing, but is also extremely happy as the ultimate “Fixie” crankset. So whether you’re a messenger, hipster or track speedster you will enjoy the qualities of this crankset. Omnium features Truvativ's strongest and stiffest alloy, AL-7050-TV and CNC’d 5mm AL-7075-T6 chainwheel. This chainwheel is designed for 1/2 x 1/8" chains.

Strengths:    With the integrated spindle and outboard bearings, performance is everything you would expect.
Exceptionally strong and stiff.
I like the chainring bolts also (hex on both sides)

Weaknesses:    Chainline is NOT 41mm as SRAM claims and not adjustable. This is real problematic if you're building a fixie. It's ironic that a crank intended for track bikes is actually incompatible with most track bikes.
SRAM's customer service is not as hassle-free as Shimano's. They require you to work through your dealer instead of dealing directly. Also, they didn't take the chainline issue seriously, giving my dealer some BS about how they measure chainline differently. They sent me a replacement crank, but it was no different from the original. I wish they could have just acknowledged the issue and saved me the time & trouble.

Bottom Line:
Be aware that the chainline for this crank is not adjustable and is NOT 41mm as SRAM claims, but 45-46mm. Optimal chainline for most track bikes is 40-42mm, so that's a huge difference. With a fixed cog, these cranks will likely be too outboard for comfort, though they may work OK with a singlespeed freewheel. If you're building an SS bike, the Omnium might just be the ticket. If you're building a track bike or fixie, get some advice from your LBS about compatible components. Use a flexible chain like KMC or SRAM (Wippermans don't work). 3 stars for chainline issue and SRAM's subpar customer service.

Strengths:    -Ease of installation
-very stiff
-extremely round chainring
-very economical track crank

Weaknesses:    -48T ring is the only one available
-May have to replace the Record crank on my track bike if I like the Omnium!

Bottom Line:
I installed this on my Fort fixie as a replacement for an aging Dura-Ace road crank. I've never had an outboard bearing crank before. Installation was incredibly easy. Seal drag was really ovbious from the start, but the instructions with the GXP bottom bracket says that will go away. The difference in stiffness is really obvious from the first pedal stroke. The crank is really beefy and looks good in an industrial kind of way. The chainring is by far the roundest track ring I have ever seen. First ride was a fifty mile Saturday morning group ride. No problems to report.
