Bianchi Alu road frame. Mix Campagnolo components from Veloce to Record. Ritchey WCS stem/bar/seatpost. Selle Italia SLR XP saddle. Summary:
After being fed up with the two sets of Shimano SPDs I had on my road bike (M540 bearing gave out after a few hundred km, poor warranty repair. A515 leaked grease, rusted around axle, noisy shoe/clip/pedal interface while pedaling). Wanting interchangability b/n MTB and road shoes, decided to give Crank Bros a go.
First impression: Nice packaging. Very very light pedals with smooth bearing.
Installation: Straight forward with an 8mm Allen key. Although the large inboard bearing hood required some modification to the sole of my Sidi Dragon SRS MTB shoes. Shaved off a bit of plastic using my Swiss Army knife. Cleat mounting was no different to SPD. Straight forward two screw job. (3 screw mounting kit included in the kit)
Usage: Surprisingly easy to clip in and clip out. Felt very secure once in and no accidental unclipping. The two sided pedal was easily handled on busy city streets, didn't even need to look down to engage. Even without clipping in, I was able to pedal away securely without slippage.
Note the 85kg rider weight limit, although I am way under that. Something to watch out for if you are well enhanced. Strengths:
- Ease of use.
- Security.
- Lightness. Weaknesses:
- Large inboard bearing cover requiring modification of MTB shoes. (Not an issue for regular road shoes)
