Civia Bryant Commuter Bike

Product Description

Designed for mid to long-distance rides, the Bryant is our take on high-speed, low-maintenance commuting. As everyday riders, we wanted a bike that is fast, efficient and ready to roll. We didn’t want to waste precious time messing with a slipping derailleur or lubing a rusty chain. That’s why we crafted the Belt Alfine build around a Gates Carbon Drive belt and Shimano’s Alfine rear hub. Wipe it down once in a while and you’re good to go. The belt provides reliable, maintenance-free performance in all conditions.

The Bryant’s geometry is engineered for a fast, responsive ride even when you load up with panniers, packs and other things. Built with our proprietary split rear dropout, the frame accommodates a traditional derailleur drivetrain or belt drive. No matter which build you choose, the Bryant delivers performance you can count on and will leave you counting the hours till you ride again

Strengths:    Carbon Belt drive and internal hub, make for an extraordinarily quiet ride.

Frame has numerous mount points for racks and fenders.

Weaknesses:    Avid BB5 brakes are not up to the task. What is otherwise an incredibly quiet and tight ride, is interrupted by the noise of disks rubbing against the pads. I will need to replace the brakes.

The Belt drive eliminates the ability to have a quick release on the rear wheel. This makes repairing flats a bit more challenging.

The bike does not come with fenders. A must for the serious commuter. The fenders offered by Civia do not fit properly. The left front fender stay must be bent so that it doesn't interfere with the disk brake. I bought fenders from Electra

Weight. This bike is heavy, even for a commuter.

Handle bar drop is abnormally deep. I replaced the bars.

Bottom Line:
The Bryant has the potential to be a great commuter bike for the most vigorous commutes. The belt drive and Shimano Alphine internal 8 speed hub combine for an extraordinarily silky smooth and quiet drive system.

The bike is on the heavy side, but still acceptable for a solid commuter.

The Avid BB5 brakes are a deal breaker. For $1750, the bike should come with brakes that work. Plan on replacing them if you purchase this bike.

With a a proper set of brakes this bike could double as a touring bike. Anyone that is looking for a quality commuter or touring bike should consider the Bryant.
