Strengths:    Cost, drivetrain

Weaknesses:    Weight, wheels, cantilevers

Bottom Line:
2 grand shipped from Bikesdirect for a carbon frame, carbon hoops and an ultegra drivetrain. Yeah, it's not a high zoot one-off brand, and everyone will know where you got it, but the deal can't really be beat. The frame has all the cross specific goodness: all 3 cables running along the toptube, a seat-tube pulley to convert a bottom pull Ultegra derailleur to top pull, cable stops for canti brake adjustment.

Handles as a cross bike should which is to say a bit slack, but still not commuter bike slack. The ultegra drivetrain functions flawlessly. Cross specific FSA (carbon) crank and BB30 function well. The wheels which are 40mm deep carbon with alu braking surfaces are nice, albeit heavy. Whether deep dish wheels really shed mud better and whether ANY of this will be the difference between standing on the podium or looking on remains to be seen.

The only downsides are the brakes which are difficult to set up. The Avid shorty 4s are cast with an odd angle to the pad holder relative to the pivot that makes them toe OUT unless you work REALLY hard to set them just right. The frame is not disc compatible, but, again, discs aren't going to put you on the podium. The bike weighs 19lb (44cm) with a single bottle cage and Shimano XT SPDs. A pound of that can be saved by some lighter wheels.

In the meantime, since I'm pretty tall (6'2") I'm thinking about getting a crankset with longer crank arms. I know the bike comes with a SRAM Force Carbon 36t-46t ... Read More »

fuji altamira cx 1.3-cyclocross, gravel grinder and misc-yay or nay?

I'm looking at a fuji alt cx 1.3 carbon framed bike and can get a killer deal on it (I work at a shop) but money is still tight to spend on another bike so I've been wanting something I can take with me everywhere and anywhere I go to ride when the chance shows itself. I mainly want to get into a sm ... Read More »
