Strengths:    Good "urban" bike without the upright position found in hybrids.

Weaknesses:    seatpost clamp didn't hold the seatpost right and tektro disc brakes noisy.

Bottom Line:
Bought this bike mainly for commuting. In generally, like it, I didn't want a hybrid. Responds much better than my older bike. After a day of commuting, the seat clamp wouldn't hold the seat post. Went back to the shop and got a new clamp. First time with disc brakes, so I didn't know what to expect. Read some reviews about the tektro IO brakes being noisy and hard to setup and they appear to be true.

Strengths:    not too expensive as a basis for upgrade, excellent finish, nice paint. Impressed by the overall quality and look . And the guys at The Alt in Mpls are so cool (and patient!).

Weaknesses:    handlebar is so-so and basic set up is just OK but not more..Deore brakes are weak.

Bottom Line:
Wow. I bought this Novato because I did not want the disk brakes (funny no?) and the gap between the 2 models was too big (450 bucks). This bike is a jewel: light, rigid, tough! I changed a couple of things such as the rear derailleur (Shimano XT) upgraded the crankset to a Truvativ firex trekking (48/38/28), a serfas RX performance gel saddle, serfas gel grips, shimano xt brake levers and rapid fire shifters integrated. Brakes upgraded to shimano XT and wheels are XT hubs on mavic rims. Ok it s a lot that has been changed but I wanted a high quality (urban) bike and could just find the Kona Dew Deluxe that I did not like and the Marin Point Reyes that is too fancy. I also got rid of the good WTB slickosaurus tires for a set of Vredestein S licks. This bike is a bullet! And the frame is really well done: triple butted, flawless welds.
