Strengths: Strong frame and wheels, fairly light, smooth, plush riding and very responsive even when fully loaded. Generator lights work well and provide ample light to see (& be seen) even in the pitch-dark places.
Weaknesses: After tooling around awhile in various conditions, I would prefer disc brakes and trigger shifters rather than the direct-pull brakes and grip shifters that come on this bike. But this bike is designed a good bit for the novice rider and commuter as well as us old road dogs. I also replaced the rim strips in the wheels with thicker stuff to avoid problems with the spoke nipples rubbing a hole in my tubes.
Bottom Line:
My bike is the 2008 Specialized/Globe "City 7" commuter, which came set up with the full commuter schmear... fender, rear rack, bell, kickstand, and the Shimano hub generator for both front and rear lights. For the starting or experienced bike commuter, this is a really good value. I've put around 200 commuting miles on it so far, and have been very impressed with the smooth ride, as well as the way it not only has the gears to ride moderately in traffic but also to kick it up a bit when the streets or trails open up. With 700Cx38 wheels and tires, it handles urban pavement and gravel lots equally well.
Similar Products Used: Prior to this bike, I used my Fisher Caliber 29er as my city/commuter bike. Also shopped the Marin Muirwoods and Trek 700 series commuters/hybrids.
Bike Setup: My bike is the stock setup, to which I've added a regular battery-powered tail light and headlight set. (When you stop at a red light and the wheels stop turning, your generator-powered lights go out).
This is going to be my first post but I've been around this msg board reading most of the posts for a while. Great board guys!

Before you leftists start smugly noting that the Globe is just a "tabloid" rag, remember the Enquirer broke the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal.
