Strengths:    I have an OSS steering R40 Vision Recumbent. Compact SWB bike steers tight turns. Solid US made chromoly steel construction ..not flimsy. Shimano 9sp group OK. Good brakes. Comfortable web seat and hamster bar steerer if you have the over seat steer option.

Weaknesses:    Good on the road, but there is a steep learning curve, especially the starts. Stock tires are slugs, and Continental Sports recc'd at 90psi for better speed. Watch the 20" wheel on gravel and cracks. Poor climbing on very steep grades. Recc mod to 28-26 tooth granny if you tour with panniers on this rig. All the typical long chain management issues with recumbents. May need to add extra guard height to keep chain in chainline if long legged (I did). No clear water bottle mounts..many use hydration packs. Use your ingenuity here.

Bottom Line:
A solidly constructed US made bike, with the typical 20" short wheelbase wheel issues of stability. Could use lower gears if you plan on touring with this rig.

Strengths:    The R-40 is fast, light and a great climber. The short wheelbase and minimal frame design makes for easy transport. While the small front wheel makes for somewhat shaky handling depending on speed and road surface, the bike launches straight and sure from a stop with a single push of the pedal. Fast accelleration is appreciated especailly on a recumbent when it is important to get clipped in and rolling.

Weaknesses:    The small 16" (359mm) front wheel is succepitble to bump-steer which can be unnerving on rough pavement.

Bottom Line:
Although Advanced Transportation Products went out of business around 2003, the Vision R-40 is still as good of a bike today as it was when it was produced. The American-made frame has clean TIG welds and a rather industrial-looking powdercoat finish.

My R-40 has the original USS while many have converted to OSS.
