Strengths: Stiff and smooth, fine wheels, handles well, shifts very smoothly, lightweight.
The bike keeps whispering, "Faster! Faster!" even when I am breathing out my ears.Weaknesses: Not quite a weakness, but the seat feels a bit too pliable at the very back. Maybe I'm just too heavy. I haven't had the bike long enough to notice anything else except stuff I like.Bottom Line: (Bike year is 2010, price is in euros.)
This is a quantum leap from my earlier bike, a 2004 aluminum frame model from Decathlon, the sporting goods store in France). FYI, I am 191 cm, 79.5 kg (6' 3", 175 lbs.) riding a 60 cm frame. Canyon asks for all sorts of measurements when you order the bike, but in the end seem only to retain height and inseam.
After looking at bikes in the ~3000 EUR range, hoping to get a deal on a Trek Madone 5.2 or a Specialized Tarmac Expert, I spoke with a friend who suggested checking out Canyon.com.
I have had the bike 2 weeks, time only to ride about 600 km so far. Yet I can already say the bike is built for riding around here. (Home is the Gresivaudan valley near the French alps.)
The 2010 Canyon Ultimate CF 8.0 seems to have better components than others in the price range. Perhaps Canyon does not have the R&D money that others spend on the frame, but this bike nevertheless sure feels stiff when I stomp on the pedals, in control when I corner, especially downhill, and comfortable at least for a 3-4 hour ride.
Favorite Ride: Sunshine, dry pavement, no deadline

Strengths: Overall ability from a top notch climbing bike. I expected a nervous climbing bike but it's a great allrounder too. This is the cheapest super bike you can buy.Weaknesses: Campy BB had to be retightened once already and is starting to squeak again, very annoying. I'm not sure if it's Canyon's fault or just a crappy crank/bb combo from Campag.Bottom Line: Mine is actually the 2009 editions with Chorus 11 and Kysrium Elites. 2009 saw Canyon increase the comfort of the frame (I never rode the earlier versions but they were regarded as a bit harsh).
I've already done 8 or 9 very hard days in the Alps plus 3 or 4 flat rides. I've definitely put it through it's paces in the short time I've had it.
Got this primarily for attacking big alpine routes in the Alps like the Marmotte sportive and others of the ilk. I wanted a light but comfortable bike for long days of climbing and descending. Unsurpringly (only 7.1 kgs and a short wheelbase) it climbs like a demon. The stiffness through the bottom bracket is absurd and the power delivery is never jittery, it's uncanny. In the saddle or standing up, it delivers all power straight to the road. On the flats, the acceleration is also unreal which is to be expected giving that BB stiffness. Some other lightweight bikes I've tried lack the ability to maintain speed on the flats, not this one. I'm amazed that it very comfortably cruises at 25 mph and is still very comfortable over bad roads. Finally the descending it absolutely top notch and it holds it's line insanely well through corners. Maybe one tick against it is that the straight line super high speed (50mph) isn't the greatest, but still it's good.
