a CommuterDate Reviewed: September 23, 2010
Strengths: It is comfortable bike for commuting, in part due to the chrome-moly steel frame. I usually load it up with about 20-25 lbs of gear, that includes a brief case with computer, lunch and change of clothes. I hardly notice the weight, even when traveling up to 25 miles per hour, (i.e., no shimmying).Weaknesses: None about the bicycle itself. Living in Phoenix, Arizona and riding part way on dirt canal roads, I have had to insert tube protectors. I suspect that this slows the bicycle somewhat.Bottom Line: I use this bike mostly for commuting to and from work a one to two times per week. The 12 mile ride (each way) involves a variety of surfaces, including asphalt, concrete bike paths and canal roads the are hard packed earth and decomposed granite. The latter comprises one-third of the distance and isn't always well graded.
The bicycle has proven to be completely reliable and comfortable to ride. I upgraded to Shimano Ultegra shifters and Deore XT rear derailleurs at the time of purchase. After about a two-month breaking-in period, shifting has been reliable and predictable, with no surprises when going up hills.
Similar Products Used: Previously used a 15 year old Novara X-R. That was a good bicycle, but the Sherpa 10 was clearly an upgrade.
Bike Setup: Reynolds 853 butt-welded frame, Shimano Ultegra shifters and Deore XT rear derailleurs, 28 x 1 5/8 in tires, Mavic A112 rims, Truvativ Touro crank.
