Strengths:    Very accurately records mileage, etc. Consistently records slope and altitude gained, though using a conservative algorithm. Now far cheaper than other computers with these functions, including newer models of VDO

Weaknesses:    The actual altitude can get out of sync on a long ascent, say 5-10%. But it can also remain spot on.

Bottom Line:
I THINK THIS IS A GOOD COMPUTER, and I see my review of some years ago has disappeared. I have used a VDO 1,0 for about 10 years, both the wired version and now the wireless ("Plus") version. It has worked well perhaps 99.5% of the time, in terms of recording altitude gained over hundreds of rides, and also slope. Based on known climbs, e.g., Mt Evans, and conversations with other owners, it would seem that a) altitude gained should usually be adjusted upward by 5 - 7%, BUT THE VDO IS VERY CONSISTENT, i.e., getting the same readings repeating the same rides, and b) slope can read well under someone else's (perhaps exaggerated?) claims for a climb, where this may be due in part to the measurement interval. In any case, since altitude gained and slope are what I want in a computer in addition to the usual functions, this computer has served me well, except the rare times when it acts up, usually due to a weak battery, or being near one particular store in Eau Galle, Wisconsin(?) And the price has dropped--I bought a few recently from Nashbar for well under $100. So I would buy another one tomorrow, if I needed one.

Strengths:    None that I can discover.

Weaknesses:    Forgot where I put the reciept.

Bottom Line:
The VDO MC 1.0 is a complete waste of money. If you want to know anything other than the current altitude and maybe the speed while you're riding, find a different computer.
1. The display is full of info. The problem is that the info you want is probably not in the display and the info that is in the display is not readable because it's way too small while the display itself has little contrast. On a bright day the display is unreadable because of reflection and if you happen to be in the shade in the woods it is simply too dark.
2. The buttons are hard to deal with while riding, especially the altitude button which is hard to press in but lacks feedback so you're not sure if it was pressed at all.
3. The setup is not intuitive. Especially annoying is setting up the wheel size without switching between Metric and English. Actually there seems to be no way not to get it wrong at first, which means a dozen of so clicks to cycle through back to where you can switch to KM again. It's like a video game - gotta make level 2 before I go to bed.
Resetting the base Altitude - as I need to do every ride from home - is a pain in the ass which can take a lot of clicks to get the right setting in the display, and then a further series of illogical clicks to transfer the home altitude to the current setting.
If you get it wrong you end up setting wheelsize again and have just switched back to English instead of Metric.
4. the Manual, while it features half a dozen languages is printed far too small.
5. The odo seems to react very slowly. You can watch the speed increase after you stop pedalling, or decrease for a second or so after you launch into a sprint. In any case, I never noticed a delay of that nature on another computer.
6. Clicking the computer into the holder is also rather difficult without simultaneously clicking a button.
