at Eastern Mountain Spo Favorite Ride: The spinning class I teach : ) Summary: Honey Stinger Energy Bars and Gels are a brand that should not be overlooked when purchasing your nutritional supplies for races or tournaments.
I compete in the sport of beach volleyball on a semi pro level, and have been competing for over 15 years. In that time, I have pretty much used EVERY energy bar (and gel when they came out) on the market. Honey Stinger energy bars are made with all natural ingredients STARTING with pure honey. There are a lot of extra B Vitamins in these products that keep your energy levels sustained well. Being that honey slowly releases energy into your body's system, there is no spike and crash as there is with other products out there. With 4 flavors to choose from, you will find at least 2 that you will love.
The gels go down easy and don't have that "thick, sticky, choky, throat" feel to them. There are 5 flavors and 2 have caffiene (great kick start for those morning races/tournaments). Since they are made with honey, you can also use them as a food add on (try the banana flavored gel in a peanut butter wrap, trust me, it's AWESOME.
Honey Stinger has just introduced AWESOME TASTING Protein Bars to their lineup in 3 flavors, Peanut Butta (which I swear to god tastes like a Reese's Cup and all my friends LOVE it) Dark Chocolate Cherry Almond which I have just purchased but have not tried yet, and Dark Chocolate Coconut Almond which I have not gotten but can only imagine tastes like an Almond Joy. With 20g of Protein and 350 calories, these bars are pretty much is my mid day snack, the protein keeps my growling tummy at bay.
So, think about this review the next time you purchase energy/nurition products. Strengths: Gels: Excellent in giving you that extra energy boost in a sports event. Awesome to add to your favorite foods as an add-in.
Bars: Great as a hunger relief during sports events when whole food would cause GI Problems, easy to transport, great flavors, easy to chew, also great as a mid-day snack when there's not a lot of time to sit down and eat. Weaknesses: In all honesty, compared to other products on the market, there are no weaknesses that come to mind...and I am very selective about nutritional products I use. Similar Products Used: Power Bar, Power Gel, ClifBar, Hammer Bars and gels, GU, JogMate Protein, MetRX.
