Lemond Revolution Trainer Pro Review

The Lemond Revolution is not portable, roars like a jet and costs as much as a beginner road bike. Yet it does have appeal because it exhibits the most realistic pedaling action of all. It feels like you’re actually pedaling on the road. Bottom line is this trainer pedals better than any other trainer before it. It spins up easy, it coasts well and loads up to 700 watts in a very realistic manner. Continue reading →

Strengths:    Road feel. The large flywheel and progressive resistance gives sensations very close to riding on the road.

Weaknesses:    Noise. It's not quiet, although the pitch is not offensive. At normal pace (say 18MPH or so), it's just added white noise. When you start doing intervals, it definitely kicks it up a notch. You can mitigate this somewhat by having carpet and other sound absorbing materials around the trainer. Not a deal-breaker at all for me, although apartment dwellers may find it an issue because you have to turn up the TV a bit. Think ShopVac loud at worst, at a lower pitch. Can't use PowerTap wheels, because the rear wheel is removed.

Bottom Line:
I pre-ordered this, after owning just about every common fluid trainer you can think of. They all gave that "riding through mud" sensation that, while providing a good workout, was nothing like riding on the road. This trainer is by far the best I've ever used. Design and construction is top-notch, and the road feel is outstanding. After a year of frequent use, I can't imagine using another trainer. It's just that good. Skip the LeMond computer if you already have an ANT+ computer, and just get a $30 Bontrager speed sensor. There's a magnet pre-mounted on the flywheel, and alignment is not that hard. The user interface on the LeMond computer just is not good at all.

Strengths:    Real road feel. Easy install. Stable. No wear on tire (no tire!!) But mostly the road feel thing.

Weaknesses:    A bit more than a good fluid trainer. But, better feel.

Bottom Line:
I have owned, in no particular order; Computrainer, Blackburn Trackstand Ultra, rollers, an old Vetta wind trainer, Cateye Gamebike (want it? for sale!). They all drove me to outfit in winter gear to keep my offseason fitness from totally vaporizing here in New England. I just couldn't last more than 15 minutes without going bonkers.

I read the reviews for the Revolution, and with their 30 day return policy, I figured, why not try it?

The reviews are spot on. It DOES feel more like real riding than anything I'VE ever tried. I can now happily go for a ride while looking out the window at the 5 feet of snow outside. I chose to NOT use the 30 day return, it's a keeper!
My observations;
1. It's not silent. But not super loud.
2. Easy to install the bike, and if you have more than 1 bike, no problem adjusting the shifting from your tires cassette to the one on the Revolution.
3. It really feels like riding. Shift up, gets harder. Shift down, gets easier. Stop pedalling, good long roll-down.
4. Not as good as outside. But close!
