Strengths:    Plenty range, intervals are reasonable, I have had no problems with it. Shifting adjustment is easy.

Weaknesses:    Grip shift unit (bought separately ?!?) slips on bar unless extremely tight. Engagement when starting to pedal is odd, feels like it shifts to the respective gear fully after 1/4 pedal revolution. Drum brake is more of a drag brake, not power like you're used to from a rim brake.

    Bottom Line:
This review is about the SRAM Spectro 7 speed internal hub, with drum brake. Bought this hub after cycle touring the pacific coast and realizing the gearing needs for cycle touring is not that great and wanting the simplicity and long wear of a derailleur-less drive train. The hub offers ~300% range, and with a 40x18 or 40x20 (don't remember) you get about a 1:1 for the lowest gear, which is as low as I need. I've so far used this on my commuting bike.

Similar Products Used:   I bought the hub because no one i knew had experience with modern internal gears. I test rode a shimano reps Nexus INter-8 bike which was good but it was much before i got my sram built up.

despite the negative bits (which are significant when comparison shopping), i have been completely happy with the hub in use. try to ride a nexus 8 and S7 if you are in the market for one of these.

Bike Setup:   the hub is laced 4x to a sun cr-18 with a specialized armadillo 700x38 tire. it's on a schwinn traveler frame.
