Strengths:    attractive, measures larger than advertised, smooth, sure grip

Weaknesses:    rear is unthreading with less than 600 miles

Bottom Line:
I've used Schwalbe Stelvio's and Racing Ralph's in the past without issue, but I'm experiencing unfamiliar results with the DD's- the rear is literally unthreading itself. I'm running 25mm's on 22mm wide AC Hurricanes and they measure in at 27mm when properly inflated. I just totaled the mileage on this set to <600 miles so far this year and quite surprised to find 'strings' hanging from the rear tire during cleaning last week. Upon further inspection, while resisting the impulse to tug the strings, I also discovered what I initially thought was a large slice in the sidewall to be an apparent separation where the ends of the tire are mated/bonded together. This was furthered by the same finding on the opposite side which has left me feeling a bit concerned as I routinely achieve 50mph on local downhills.

So, do I concern myself and replace or not worry about it since it's only occurring on the rear and perhaps not ready for the trash just yet? I doubt I'll ever hear back from Schwalbe, but perhaps I should give them a shout.

In the end it's hard to rate these tires as the front is fine, but the rear appears to be self destructing...

This mixture was obviously chosen for long term durability/strength, no carbon bits other than the OEM fork, and thus far the only fault would be the rear tire's unraveling...

Schwalbe 25mm Ultremo DD blowing off of rim

I've got a couple of these tires sitting around the house, because I'm afraid to use them. One blew off of a Fulcrum 5 rim 45 minutes after I got to work, and the other blew off one side with a Dura Ace 7900 rim at the end of a 4 hour ride. I'm not sure if it was the same tire. I just came off a ... Read More »

Schwalbe Ultremo DD

I'm a huge fan of Schwalbe tires and have used them almost exclusively on both my road and MTB for a number of years now. Currently I am in the process of building a winter road ride so I don't have to spend so many grueling hours on the trainer or be forced to take a 5k C-Dale out on the miserable ... Read More »

Continental Grand Prix 4 Season Vs Schwalbe Ultremo DD

I've been riding Continental Grand Prix 4 Season tires for the past couple of years. I like the tires and think the weight / performance and puncture resistance is very good. I also trust them in high speed cornering. I have been seeing more people lately on the Schwalbe Ultremo DD and that loo ... Read More »

Good deals on Ultremo DD?

I want to replace my wire-bead Continental tires with the Ultremo DD's. I've had them before, and they're fantastic tires, I never got a flat on them despite the cuts on the tire. I got my last pair for under $40 each. Nowadays, they're going for about $50 each! I'm specifically looking for the ... Read More »

First impressions: Schwalbe Ultremo DD

I just finished my first ride on these, 38 miles on a hot Texas Friday. Out of the box, the tires look impressive with a semi-gloss finish that has a slightly bumpy texture. You won't see any tires that look like this, and the large letters stand out from all the other tires you find on the road. ... Read More »
