at Sid's Bikes, NYC Favorite Ride: Santa Cruz Mountains Bike Setup: 2007 Specialized Tarmac Pro (54) - 2008 full Dura-Ace groupo - 53/39 crankset; 11/23 and 12/27 cassettes, 08 Mavic Elites, 09 Shimano WH-7850 24C, 3T ARX-Team stem, Specialized SL short-drop handlebar, Look Keo carbon pedals. Summary: I've put over 8,000 miles on my set of 08 Elites that came stock on my Tarmac Pro since April, 08. My weekly training rides consist of a rolling hill century (5,500'gain), two 40 mile mountain rides (4,500'gain each), two easy 60 mile rides (3,000'gain each). I'm 5-9 and weigh low 150s. Roads are a mix of chip and seal and buttery smooth tarmac - mostly the first. After all these miles I consider my pair bomb proof. I've had no problems with the hubs, nor have I had to true them. I've read some rather unpleasant reviews from others but I've been really pleased with my set. Don't get up to speed as quick because of the added weight at the rims and non-aero build but on rolling hills it's an advantage. However, I have recently upgraded to Shimano's WH-7850 24-carbon clinchers. I'm wishing the Shimano's have the same bomb proof characteristics sans several hundred grams and a smoother hub. Strengths: Absolutely bomb-proof; no issues with hub, spokes or rim.
Not much noticeable flex - although there is some when pressing hard of the saddle on a climb.
Feel safe descending at 45+
Weight hasn't been an issue - think of the extra grams as a training tool. Weaknesses: Is a bit of a harsh ride - Specialized Mondo Pro tires might be partially to blame.
There is more rotation weight at rims so getting up to speed is not as fast but on the other hand once up to speed it does well on rolling hills.
