Strengths: Strong, smooth, affordable. Good quality control at the factory (as seen by the number of inspection initials on each wheel).Weaknesses: Heavy, but that's the price of strength. Nonstandard hub spacing. Proprietary lockring. The rim strip provided is undesirable, get some Velox tape instead.
They could cost less.Bottom Line: I bought these as a racing wheel for the track. The hubs are smooth, the spoke tension is very high, and the rim is stout enough to take it. Straight-pull is a great design if you're going to use a spoked wheel. The adjustment of the hub bearings is very easy, and can be performed while the wheels are mounted on the bike. They come with valve extenders, but the rim works fine with a 45mm stem.
The biggest beef I have with these wheels is the chainline- it is 2mm outboard of a typical hub, which is a Mavic thing. The problem is that it makes it a little more difficult to switch to a second set of wheels. Get your bottom bracket 3-4mm wider than specified if you don't have the adjustability. Also, the Mavic proprietary lockring means no borrowing a spare from anyone else unless they also have Mavics (similar to Phil Wood). Else these are a great set of wheels.
Favorite Ride: Amalfi
Price Paid:
$457.00
Purchased At: Mavic dealer
Similar Products Used: Velocity Deep-V, many, many other Mavic rims. These are not that similar, other than the fact that they are hoops. Other straight-pull spoke designs from mavic are similar.
Bike Setup: Teschner Track Pro trimmed with carbon doo-dads and such.
