Product Description

By pairing the same ROL 3D forged hubset used on the Race SL and D'Huez with SAPIM double-butted spokes and our 27mm alloy rim, the Volant R/T is a workhorse wheelset with a classic look and ride quality. Equally adept at pounding out those all important training miles, the R/T is right at home at weekend criteriums and cyclocross races. Weighting in a just 1,655g, the R/T is also a great choice to replace the heavy and sluggish wheelsets that often come as original equipment (OE) on many road bikes. Suggested rider weight limit of 240lbs.

// 27mm Alloy Aero Clincher Rim // 3D Forged ROL Hubset // 2.0mm SAPIM RACE Double-butted Silver Spokes // 24 Spoke Front - Radial // 28 Spoke Rear - 2x2x // Japanese EZO Sealed Cartridge Bearings // Includes Skewers and Rim Tape

Wheelset Weight Excluding Rim Tape: 1,655g

Strengths:    Great value for the money.

Weaknesses:    None so far.

Bottom Line:
Very pleased. I wanted a second wheelset for the winter and long rides over chip top. Not as light as my Dura Ace 7850s but not a lot of drop off. Spin up nicely and are very stiff. I run 25mm Continental A/S with these at about 95 psi and the ride is very comfortable. I weigh 160 pounds and could have gone with the Volants but the I like the idea of the extra spoke count of the Volant R/T- adds to the durability. At 1650 grams not the lightest but still lighter than stock wheels with a much better hub.

Strengths:    Very stiff in acceleration and lateral stiffness (even under my big behind)
Lightweight
Quality hubs/Rims
Customer service is outstanding (quick + knowledgeable)
Great price point

Weaknesses:    They don't weigh nothing and they aren't free

Bottom Line:
I am a big guy at 220 lbs and I crank out some serious wattage, I am one of those guys who rides on "normal gear" and will strip several spokes on a really hard sprint and/or snap top quality chains like there's no tomorrow, These things are just as light as the competition but they kick their butts on quality and strength. Not to mention service is out of the roof good. I busted a spoke after about 100 miles, talked to the owner and within about a week a had a whole new wheelset with even stronger spokes (even though they didn't need to because sapim had a bad manufacturing run and had some faulty spokes.)

Strengths:    Strong and Durable, extremely well built (Stayed even tensioned even after 5 new spokes and still remain true). They are stiff and responive and can hold aggressive lines in high speed corners yet still do not have a harsh ride. I am at the weight limit and cannot detect any unreasonable flex or deflection during my riding. (It's there but it does not cause me to hesitate to take them to my limit)

Weaknesses:    The only potential niggle is the weight but it's irrelevant because they are still lighter than any other wheel with a 240lb rider limit! (That I could find at the time) Considering what they survived I cannot honestly fault these wheels!

Bottom Line:
I picked up these wheels in April to replace the POS CXP-22, Formula OEM set which I had to retrue after every ride. I finally got them on my bike for a 75k charity ride and they exceeded my every expectation. They were smooth, they were stable at all speeds (up to 75kph) on the sometimes rough roads and brought me to the finish in a personal best time despite my lack of training. Next ride out my d-hanger snapped and sent the chain and derailleur into the wheels. I assumed they were garbage. Closer inspection showed that the damage was limited to 5 gouged spokes and the wheel was still relatively true. I was able to contact Rol for advice and Sean himself replied with his recommendations. I had my LBS replace the spokes and I finished up the truing myself after a short ride and have yet to detect any need for a touch up (Since I am in Canada shipping them back would have been excessively expensive and time consuming). I am back to riding and they continue to be a joy. They spin up extremely quickly, have confidence inspiring stiffness on the short and technical "descents" and still don't have a punishing ride quality. I cannot say enough good things about these wheels considering the punishment my 6'2" 235lb frame (and a freak mechanical failure) have dished out. Buying a new set of Rol's will be a no brainer although I will likely upgrade to the Race SLR's.

Value is second to none. I dare you to find another wheel rated for 240lb under 1800g for less than $500 shipped! (I spent dozens of hours and came up empty)

Overall Rating cannot be anything less than a 5 because these wheels should have been trashed by the d-hanger failure yet they still are going strong.

Strengths:    Light, strong, and didn't break the bank

Weaknesses:    None as of yet

Bottom Line:
This wheelset makes my brakes better. I'm a fast clydesdale (220 pounds) who likes to sprint. I can run my brake pads very close to the rims, closer than I ever have, and they don't rub. Even in a sprint. Oh, yeah, the wheels are light, accelerate fast, and have stayed true here in bumpy New England. I'm glad I took a chance on the Rol brand. For me, these are great everyday wheels.

Strengths:    fairly light.

Weaknesses:    questionable build quality

Bottom Line:
I'm somewhat dissatisfied with the wheelset. On the first long ride with them, climbing a 12% grade caused creaking noises from the rear wheel. Wheel not stress relived well enough during build. After ride inspection showed the wheel needed retruing after only 80 miles. I have doubts about the overall integrity of the wheel. Time will tell
