Strengths: Built like a tank with 32 spokes front and rear. Good hubs. Reasonable weight.Weaknesses: NoneBottom Line: I have owned Mavic Open Pros on just about every bike. Recently switched to Easton aero wheels and very dissapointed there. I couldn't wait to get rid of the aero wheels as they are a complete handful in a good wind, and the lightness of the front wheel COMPLETELY transformed the handling of my Colnago C-50 for the worse.
So...yesterday I bought a pair of Mavic Open Pro's, mounted tubes and tires, and got them on my bike, and voila! This is what my Colnago C-50 is supposed to ride like. The Mavic wheels are smoother than the Eastons, The Mavic's seem to roll up faster than the Eastons. This is counter to what is supposed to happen with aero wheels. Handling on the Colnago is dead straight ahead and solid. They are heavier than the Easton Aero rims, but lighter rims aren't always what is cracked up to be. Frankly I don't like to muscle a bike around just because it might be windy. The aero wheels are HORRIBLE in that regard. Funny with all the hype on aero wheels. They do look cool, but I know without a doubt that they are top level racers flying down hills just as good without aero wheels, and years ago aeor wheels never existed and they were none to the wiser and reached speeds then like today.
You can't go wrong with Mavic Pros. I owned a set for six years awhile back and not once did I have to true them. These are fantastic wheels! I will neve again buy a set of aero wheels. The tried and true Mavic Open Pros are just exactly that...tried and true!

Bottom Line: Defective rear wheelset: I weigh only 175 and go very easy on the rims. I've broken three spokes and just broke a rim -- all on the rear. Unacceptable.

Strengths: True, light, fast.Weaknesses: Rear wheel rims crack easily. On my Campy-equipped bike, three rear rims have broken in the last four years. Unacceptable.Bottom Line: I have used Mavic Open Pro wheels for years and I am generally happy with them. They stay true and round - up to a point. The problem that I keep experiencing is that the rear rims crack and the wheels turn to junk. I would guess that these wheels are intended for lighter riders. I weigh 185 pounds and have replaced broken rear rims three times in four years.

Strengths: hub feels super smooth and rim seems very nice.Weaknesses: Nashbar needs to learn how to build a wheel!!!!Bottom Line: Nice wheel, but the WORST built wheel I've ever purchased. After the first 20 mile ride, it was completely out of true with one spoke completely loose. I returned it and got another from Nashbar ... and the same exact thing happened. the tension felt spongy to begin with. I've never had a problem with Nashbar built wheels before. Maybe they've hired a neanderthals.
Price Paid:
$129.00
Purchased At: Nashbar
Bike Setup: Colnago with shimano ultegra 9 spd. Very sweet.
