2007 Orbea Opal w/Ultegra and Zipp wheels

    Summary:
So far so good. No complaints. Corners well and hasn't been affected by cuts or flats. They roll very well and get up to speed quickly. I have yet to encounter any of the problems that I read about this product.

    Strengths:
    Handling, fast, corners well.

    Weaknesses:
Somewhat difficult to install but I'm used to that with the Michellins Pro3Race.

    Bike Setup:
Rikulau Titanium with Sram Force 2010: http://www.rikulau.com/rikulau_english/products/Road_bike.php

    Summary:
I'm writing in to warn folks about Continental Grand Prix 4000 (700 x 25 and folding) tires with black Chili compound. I've only been on these a month and I've had one flat and 3 good-sized tears in the rear tire. The roads here in Taiwan are in fantastic shape (road my Conti Gatorskins here all last year without incident)so I was REALLY surprised to see these things coming apart so quickly.

    Strengths:
Improved braking and better grip on the many decents around here.

    Weaknesses:
Weak puncture protection and tear resistence (I'm not talking about the sidewalls... right on the meat of the tire!).

    Price Paid:  $50.00 at LBS

    Favorite Ride:
    Santa Barbara/Carpinteria area

    Bike Setup:
Motobecane Ice, Dura Ace equipped, AC 350's.

    Summary:
I bought two of these (Continetal GP 4000 w/Vectran) and was quite satisfied with durability, handling and cut resistance over the first couple thousand miles of trouble free service. I also like the wear indicators. However, I put a new one on a different bike and while they were still practically brand new, the sidewall ruptured. It didn't blow out, but after ride I noted a significant break on the outside that partially broke through to the inside. I weigh slightly more than 140#. While on the ride, I may have struck something to cause the break, as I heard a noise and felt something, but wasn't sure what it was. Bottom line, reading other blogs similar to mine re sidewall weakness, I probably will not buy another one. Over many years and miles of cycling, I perhaps had only one or two other similar side wall blow out experiences, and not on a practically brand new tire. Too bad, because othewise, I thought these were great tires. If this was a fluke mishap, my apologies to Continental for criticizing an otherwise very good tire. Hope y'all have better luck with them.

    Strengths:
    cut resistance, handling, wear indicators.

    Weaknesses:
    Possible sidewall weakness.

Price Paid:  $55.00 at Excel Sports

    Favorite Ride:
    Masonville-Buckhorn Canyon

    Bike Setup:
BMC Pro with Campy Record and SRM, Zipp Team training wheels

    Summary:
I was riding the S version of the tire. These tires failed at the rim/bead causing me to crash. I was on a 45 mph descent when the bead pulled out of the tire on the front. The bead material is lying cleanly i teh bottom of the rim and the tire is completely separated from it. I lost a lot of skin but was very lucky. The road was clean and I did not hit anything. This is clearly some kind of defect with this tire as there is enough feedback on this forum and others to prove that. Continental did not respond to my questions so I would love to know what causes this. In spite of the good tread life that people report, these tires are not worth taking a chance on. Details are I am 190 lbs, 110 PSI, new tire (<200 miles), Zipp Team rim in excellent shape. I would avoid these tires and would not recommend them.

    Strengths:
Good tread life reported by many

    Weaknesses:
Bead failure resulting in blowouts, tightest tire I ever mounted to a rim
