Had not ridden a bicycle for 25 years until last fall -- hey, I'm a motorcycle guy. But fit. Took a 15 mile mountain "rails-to-trails" cruise...discovered "index shifting" and other cool things, like able to travel at 30mph etc. Immediately went out and bought a wrong bike, sold it and picked up a 2012 Specialized Sirrus Elite. A thousand miles later this bike is very solid and delightful. My friend has a 2011 model and we rode it through the muck and snow last December / January. It is very secure on gravel and other road junk. Lower end Shimano compenentry (Alivio) is a little tough to dial in perfectly, but it can be done. Stock rear tire failed after about 400 miles, Switched to SPD pedals (do this!!) A versatile, powerful stable ride -- excellent!!

Heavy, but it's also not a road bike

Strong, balanced, fast, very comfortable. I committed to completing a century ride just over a year ago. My Specialized Expedition was way too cumbersome for me to train with. I love Specialized bikes, geometry, value and looks. Beats Trek hands down for equivalent bikes.
The Sirrus Elite was the perfect step up from a mountain bike for me. The straight bar has kept me in a reasonable comfort zone as I've learned other biking skills and transitioned to much faster speeds.

I like the colour silver and black (I know this is subjective).

If You go very fast on the road from a hill it is very likely You will block the rear wheel. The V-break catch the wheel to much. Do it one time and I am happy to be alive. OK, nothing happen just rear wheel go half a meter sideways but scary as hell.

I bought Specialized Sirrus Elite after a long research what type of bike I should use. Previously I had an MTB but didn't like that it was very slow on the road. I wanted the faster one but I didn't want a road bike because I ride off-road in the forest quite often.

After I bought the Sirrus Elite I ride quick tour on the road and it was great. It was really fast just like road bike. My neighbour (who intensively rides a bike many years) propose to take tour on the road paths. So I did. (Week earlier I cannot keep up with him on this track on my MTB ). He has modified Touring Bike. That week was different. I must wait for him on every corner because He cannot keep up( and I didn't ride my bike for 10 years). My Sirrus Elite was great also in the forest on the mud and sand. I am sure no road bike can do that.

Now from spring to fall I going on my bike to work 15 km each direction mostly on pavement in a city.

On the road the bike is great. It is fast so the speed difference between cars and bike it is not so much so I feel a litle safer. In the start from road light it can be faster than most cars :). Well, one more thing, I am doing 30 km when I go to work, so I meet many people on the bikes. Many times happen that someone wants to race with me. I usually :) don't speed up just after less that 1 km I overtake the exhausted biker. Of course with road bike it wouldn't happen but there are no road bikes on pavement.

Well, for me it is perfect bike. You can ride on road (almost like road bike), on pavement You are faster than other bikes (MTB, touring, etc.). You can ride on the mud and on the sand. So if You don't go to heavy terrain like rocks it good on everything.

crappy gears, shifting gears always slips even when new, not for hard core use, pedal clips are cheap, therefore did not last.

GOOD bike, use it everyday for work commute. Once a week i go for a 15 mile ride. good bike, but has its buts for daily users like me

it's a road oriented touring or commuter bike. replaced cruise oriented parts: adjustable stem (w/fixed flipped stem), padded saddle (w/brooks leather saddle), full finger brake levers (w/two finger brake levers). also flipped handlebar spacers to lower stem, cut handlebar to narrower, shoulder width. added bar ends to provide alternative hand positions. now it's a fast, light, competitive road event machine that also is a good commuter. best bike for the price point for commuter/road event machine. one point off in overall rating for cruise components.
