Strength:

Medium low price. High quality bearings.

Weakness:

Basic design? Not sure.

Bought both a 1" and 1-1/8", one for each of my bikes. The 1-1/8" version was a real pain and always seemed to be tightening up after a long ride and/or making noise. I faced the head tube (twice) and fork (once) to make sure everything was square and true. Also, used a torque wrench to make sure the Ritchey WCS stem was tightened to specification (high end of specification at that) to make sure nothing was sliping. Bottom line is that I think the Cane Creek bevel angle on the crown races is off somewhere. The 1" version was less trouble regarding binding but still made noise. Oh, and yes, everything was faced properly on this frame also. Replaced both with King headsets and problem solved. Honest! No additional facing, nothing! Just press them in and ride!

Strength:

Easy to install

Weakness:

As above

This headset is not that great. First, it lets dirt particles into the bottom cup (more so than most headsets). Second, I just feel like it's not machined that great with alignment factors. I would probably not buy another one.

Strength:

Light, precision and maintenance free

Weakness:

None so far

I have a 2000 Trek 5500 (Lance Ltd.) which came with the Cane Creek SL-5. Since this is an OEM and was made to be superlight, it developed a pit. Cane Creek was going to replace with an Aheadset CL. I opted for the S-Pro and they kindly sold it to me for $40. This is an awesome headset that requires no maintenance. Installed properly, it works great. If you have this problem with the SL-5, don''t let your LBS tell you its not a warranty item. Call Customer Service at Cane Creek.
