Strength:

Great for climbing

Weakness:

Most bike shops can't work on spokes. The free hub bearing constantly need attention and finally after 10Kmiles wear out completely with no replacement options. Cracked rear rim at 7K miles

If you have the assets to replace these wheels often then they are great. Perfect for climbing, but maintenance will be an issue.

The rims are very light and strong.

Weakness:

Problem with carbon and alloy spokes where end of spokes is covered by nipple, spokes froze to nipple. Impossible to retrue wheels as the whole spokes turn when trying to retrue because of frozen spokes head to nipple. Rear retaining ring broke, noise from rear bearings.

Wheels are light and strong, climbs well and runs good on flats. Hard to get replacement spokes as the dealer just told me to wait for his 2013 order to come in at end of year. I did expect better service from Mavic as these wheels are expensive and should be more durable. Was told by dealer that i will have to replace the entire side of spokes. 8 spokes not just the one broken spokes. these carbon spokes are expensive.

stiff, climb well, very light clinchers.

Weakness:

service could be a little better, but overall great company and wheels Im a fan!

Purchased these over topolinos after hearing about the spoke problems with those wheels. These wheels are light and fasr hills, sprints, but I did purchase these before the recalls . sent both of them back and it took several months to get them back. I use these along with my training heavy wheels. Im not a little guy., 210 6 ft 1 and I hammer these wheels./ I also have zips and others and have the confidence for double cenrurys and races on these wheel. I will run them till they are dust. You cant always have a perfect bike wheel they all have issues, including zipp 404s, sent both of thoses back too. these rock!!

Strength:

Stiff, yet compliant with the correct tire/wheel set-up. I recommend Vittorias any day. Love the black rims and spokes and the carbon hubs. I also like the wheel magnet design.

Weakness:

There is a bit of play in the rear hub which I cannot figure out how to fix, but not enough to be a negative. It is a very slight play which probably just needs some tightening of the cones. No other weakness found.

I was hesitant buying carbon-spoked wheels at first, but I did hear that Mavic recalled the first generation R-Sys. I was pleasantly surprised to get these wheels brand new. I put Vittoria Open Corsa CX 320 TPI on the wheels and I really love the set up. The wheels are stiff, but the Vittorias smooth the vibrations. I took a corner at about 22 mph and found the wheels to be responsive. The Vittorias are very grippy and the R-Sys were very stiff on the turns - no wasted energy going around the corners or off-the-saddle sprinting. I did notice the dust caps are just flat pieces of carbon which leads me to believe that I should not ride these wheels in the wet.

They are Rock solid a strong as hell. Fast accelerate climb like a bat out of hell. Cant say enough good things about them.

Weakness:

They are a little slower on the flats.

Ture I was afarid to try these wheels too with all the bad stories and awfull stories wth them but I got the revised version so I thought Mavic deserved a second chance. These are incredable wheels, they are stiff as hell but they do smooth out the ride just a little over the Ksyurim SL. They react and acclerate as fast as you even think about it. And they are incredablly strong I am 6'2 185lbs. and they have worked awesome. I ride on rough roads and abuse the hell out of them but they are still perfectlly true. I have even commutted on them for a couple of months.

Light, great at climbing, awesome lateral stiffness.

Weakness:

The stigma of the recall and pictures of people crashing in these wheels

I understand that there have been highly publicized incidents of the wheel breaking up, and one post-recall incident where the wheel also broke.
Mavic actually responded to velonews regarding that incident. There has not been a second incident involving post-recall wheels.

These wheels are very nice and climbs hills flawlessly. The 2010 version comes in different flavors, but uses the same post-recall spokes.

I've used the post-recall wheels for one season and trust that they wont break. I've hit potholes and generally abused the wheels. People say these wheels aren't aero - but when you're going up a hill, who cares? Haven't need to true these wheels yet! Although I'm not sure how they would be trued because you can't exactly stretch carbon...

Strength:

* Look great due to carbon spokes.
* Rims are strong and robust.
* available in tubular (singles) which I use.

Weakness:

* Both wheels very slow compared to top shelf racing wheels even 25 year old ones.
* Front creaks loudly and constantly when under load and out of the saddle hill climbing.

* Mavic Australia could not repair creak!

* The spoke problem is not completely sorted since the general recall and people are still encountering spoke breakage.

* The spoke issue now has me concerned as people are still being injured.

* Very expensive for what is only a flash training wheel.

My Mavic R Sys wheels are two years old and have travelled only 10k km so far. During this time although reliable I have found the R Sys wheels to be slow due to poor quality bearing hubs. The wheel bearing hubs are no better or faster than the base level wheels and not even close to Campag Chorus or Record hubs. I have very old (25 yrs)Campag Record hubed hard silver Fiamme wheels that are miles faster than these wheels and not much heavier, even with 36 spokes. 36 s.s spokes do not collapse!

In order to coax good speed out of these wheels I have had to back the bearing tension off and this results in the front wheel creaking like mad when under load on hill climbs. This has been the case from brand new.

The front wheel was replaced as part of the General recall and the hub is exactly the same, slow and creaks. I have had Mavic Australia look at it and they cannot find a problem. Mavic just fobbed me off!

The wheels are not race grade wheels at all not even close to my old Fiammes which are true race wheels albeit old.

The Mavics are very high priced training wheels only which look good with carbon spokes.

The wheel rims are however very robust and stiff.

The spoke breakage issue is a real problem even after the new Ultimate improvements and people are still being injured, which now has me a little worried.

I will be replacing these wheels shortly with Campag Shamals due to much faster, don't creak, more reliable and look great.

Climbing, looks and dampening of the road.

Weakness:

price, rolling flats

It might be a bit too early but I can't complain nor brag about this wheelset. They definitely have softened up my semi harsh Prince. They do a great job of dampening the road. The climb very well also but they are tough to keep rolling on the flats. All in all they are a pretty well rounded.

Strength:

Great handling, excellent power transfer with climbing and sprinting, and very compliant. I now own four sets of these.

Weakness:

Absolutely NONE!

I've had no problems at all with these wheels for the period of time I've been riding these(pre and post recall). I've put the R-Sys wheels to test with hundreds of miles on steep up/down technical terrain with poor road surfaces, and in all sorts of wind conditions.

Considering my diverse riding conditions, I haven't ridden a better wheel than the R-Sys. I'm sure there are probably better wheels out there for specific riding conditions, e.g., smooth-surfaced crits, time trials, long flat grinders, etc., but for me, this is an outstanding wheelset for rides encompassing a wide variety of terrain and road surfaces.

I also think a lot of the hysteria generated by the front spokes blowing up is just what it is - mass hysteria. I've seen other riders' conventional spoked wheels break spokes and wrap around some part of the hub, or otherwise leave them stranded. Bikes sometime go through a lot of stress, so things WILL break over time.

Strength:

light, extremely strong and efficient.

Weakness:

Poor handling in windy conditions and poor aerodynamic characteristics - of coarse you don't have to be a brain surgeon to figure that one out.

I purchased these becuase they really stuck a cord with the engineer in me, but when I road them I wasn't completely hooked. No doubt they are an excellent climbing wheel, but their a bit too expensive and light for a training wheel. The biggest problem I have with them is the fat spokes are not aerodynamic which causes noticable drag on the down hills and flats (they also get blown around in the wind), so the clinchers aren't ideal for racing. Yet, they're a very durable (I say this in defiance to all the others, and I know I ridden rougher roads than any) and an extremely light wheel. Probably too light for training, but that's what I use them for. The only time I broke a spoke is when I accidently stuck a shoe cleat in the spokes while spinning at around 23 mph. Even then I road on the cracked spoke for another three months with no problems before I was able to replace it...I live on Guam what can I say. I'm swapping out the hub so I can use them on my new bike.
