Strength:

Durable with reasonable weight to cost.

Weakness:

Can't really think of any that wouldn't apply to any wheel set.

My CAT2 son is the one who actually rides these. I'm just the wallet and wrench. LOL We first bought these because the price to weight ratio was what we could afford. He trained and raced for the first full year on these wheels with a powertap. At the end of the first year the PT had to go back to Saris for service and the rim needed more than I could give it in terms of truing but it was still very ridable. I emailed Neuvation and they said that they'd take a look at the rim and send the PT to Saris for us then rebuild the wheel and send it back. So I sent the thing out and they did exactly what they said that they would. What we got back was a brand new wheel which has lasted another year of training and racing. Though this wheel set isn't the only set that he has now, it is his primary set because of the powertap. It's worth pointing out that all I paid for in this deal was the shipping to Neuvation.

I would like to say cost, but a spoked pair of training wheels will most likely last longer than these.

My rims have developed cracks around the spokes. I also called Neuvation and they offered me the same "Wheel rebuild deal" as others have found. There must be issues with rim quality to have to offer this service. There is play in the rear wheel which undoubtably will lead to a premature wearing of the hub(no amount of tightening will remedy it and was actually told "Zipps have the same play",as the aluminum on these wheels is of low quality.
At most these wheels are for training and not really for racing. Anyone who wants to consider these raceable wheels most likely never has ridden a quality high end race wheel. Unfortunately John no longer deals with customers and I believe this will cost him in the long run. Remember.....you get what you pay for.

Strength:

Light weight, very responsive, good for climbing. Outstanding price.

Weakness:

Durability, durability, durability.
(Rims also have too many decals.)

I purchased a set of Neuvation R28-SL3 wheels a few years ago. I ride a Giant OCR Limited, which is a very soft-riding frame, and weigh 180 lbs. I don't ride hard (I'm 52 years old) and have put approximately 6500 miles on the Neuvation rims. Much to my dismay I recently found that seven of the cog side spoke holes are cracked. It's only a matter of time before one pulls through.

I emailed Neuvation and asked if this was the standard life of an R28-SL3 and, if not, would they replace it or discount a replacement. All they offered to do was rebuild it at their std rebuild price. The website language regarding the rebuild sounds as if it's something they either expected or felt they needed to offer due to failures.

The rebuild price of $65 is pretty reasonable, although I also have to pay to ship the wheel to CA. I love the responsiveness of the Neuvation rims but I must say that I'm a bit disappointed that the rear wheel lasted just 6000+ miles.

Hype

Weakness:

Customer service and rim material

My first ever post. (not pleasant)
Re: R28SL2
Rim failure, 9 out of 24 rear spokes pulled through the rim, mostly drive side. Obviously inferior rim Aluminum material. I purchased these because of previous posts that "bomb proof" wheel could be used on long tours with little worry. Customer service gave me a bunch of bull that low count rims are prone to failure, not so with Campagnolo sets that I race with and have many miles on. Their indifference is unjustified in my opinion, they do not stand behind their product. Previously I have had friends that had issues with broken hub flanges and they replaced the wheels. I guess the new guys that replace John Nugent on the emails are instructed to say a big fat "NO".

Strength:

-inexpensive
-smooth hubs
-lightweight and good tempo on climbs
-descends well
-comes with extra spokes and spoke style is at many shops

Weakness:

-little quality and durability of rear hub/pawls
-difficult to mount tires (Michelin Pro's)
-relatively harsh ride compared to box section rims.
-not as stiff in the corners as I'd like... (I'm only 150 lbs)
-no value if they don't last long

This is a review for the R28 SL 2. It took me awhile to post this follow up:

I liked these wheels for the first few thousand miles, but I discovered some weaknesses. After about 3 thousand miles the rear hub/pawls was toast. It made a loud creaking noise when climbing or putting watts down. I took it to a "WRENCH" on several occasions to check grease, bearings and torque BUT the pawls were discovered to be shot.
I've read similar accounts about Neuvation rear wheel hubs/pawls. Don't expect durability from the rear wheel after about 3 thousand miles. This is a case where you "get what you pay for..."

Light weight and roll well

Weakness:

Broken Spoke, light weight doesn't really matter when they are sitting in the garage broken. I will repost when I see how the customer service is. I have requested a new rear wheel as I have no confidence in racing this wheel. They already turned a training ride into a touring ride. I am not looking for a race to be turned into a broom wagon ride.

strong - crashed into a car mildly and had to true a bit but that was all.

Weakness:

the front rim has a slight bulge on the brake surface I notice when braking. With hard braking it will show up...just when I dont need it. scares me a bit ocassionally.

the black on the rim has become covered in minute crevacise, but I dont look at them too closely too long.
Fit my tires a bit too snug.
Having to find long valve tubes or else getting lucky with the pump.
T
he finish on the spokes also looks poor but it holds up well.
the quick releases aren't tight and I suspect them as being the cause of all-to-common front end slack on many wheelsets I've had. salsa and durace are a sure thing for me. Kyserium skewers were also not tight enought and I replaced them

overall I'm happy.

Strength:

thin black spokes look great
very light
climb well

Weakness:

poor handling
tight to get tires on
moderately harsh ride

I bought these wheels because they looked great, are light, and were attractively priced. Shipping was prompt from Neuvation. They spin up fast, climb well and ride fast. They were fairly stable on a 50+ MPH straight descent but got a bit sketchy above 55.

Their downsides are a harsher ride in comparison with Open Pros. They are also tight to mount tires on (Michelin Pro2 Race were a tough combination on this rim). Their most significant disappointment is poor handling. The wheels flex so much that I have to correct my line multiple times in sharp or fast corners which is not confidence inspiring. Since most of my rides include fast descents with corners, this is a big deal for me. I "spoke" with several wheel builders and they all recommended higher spoke-count wheels with larger diameter spokes for good handling. For reference, I weigh about 165#.

If your rides don't include fast corners, this may be a great wheel for you.

Very responsive acceleration, and climb like crazy. Look like they will hold up well.

Weakness:

None for the price.

Nothing comes close for the price. There are prettier and more advanced designs, but if you want great hubs, light weight (1510,) and no nonsense performance, look no further. They did need truing out of the box, as some of the spokes were a little loose. However, I'm 180lbs and they are holding up great. Much more rigid and faster than a pricey pair of Spinergy I was riding.

Real people at Neuvation with the best customer service out there, period!

Weakness:

None.

I have a set of Mavic ssc sl and Campy Nuetrons. I brought these as a back up pair for training. All I can say is wow! Not as stiff as the Mavic SSC SL but who always wants super stiff. I will say they are lighter than the $1000 I paid for the Mavics and Campy Nuetrons. Zero compliants for the price. Beautiful set of hubs and rims. Plus they send you spare spokes just in case. Mine are still true after 2000 miles. I am buying another set.
PS. Neuvations components are a great deal too!
