Absoluteblack announced this week the release of their new 7005 Txxx CNC machined alloy cyclocross chainrings. Designed for use with single front chain ring drivetrains, each Absoluteblack CX Oval ring is machined with a narrow-wide tooth profile to grip the chain, helping lessen the chance of race wrecking dropped chains.

With options to fit most popular Shimano and SRAM road cranks and Absoluteblack’s patent pending power smoothing ovality, they are the nice upgrade for any cyclocross bike. The Absoluteblack Oval Cyclocross chain rings are designed to directly retrofit to most popular cranks in the following options:

CX 110mm/4 bolt spider: 38T (65g), 40 and 42T coming soon in Black or Racing Red. Ovality is optimized to each size separately. 38T- 11.4% ; Timing of 110.5° after TDC (top dead center)

CX 110mm/5 bolt spider: 38T (63g), 40 and 42T coming soon in Black or Racing Red. 38T- 11.4% ; Timing of 110.5° after TDC (top dead center)

CX SRAM specific Direct Mount: 36T (89g), 38T (94g), 40T (104g), 42T (111g) in Black or Racing Red. Ovality is optimized to each size separately. Range: 10.2-12.1% and Timing of 110.5-112.3° after TDC (top dead center).

By smoothing power delivery, the oval rings are claimed to help reduce the spikes of torque traditionally experienced by riders. In this way, the oval rings help maximize the control power and torque delivery to the rear tire. Thus minimizing the risk of losing traction in the rear tires contact patch from being torn through the soft ground.

Absoluteblack’s Oval CX chain rings are especially useful when exiting slow speed corners, which proliferate most cyclocross courses. The ovality helps riders feed power back to the rear wheel in a smoother, more controlled manner.

As with all Absoluteblack oval chain rings, each ring has a specific ovality and ‘timing’. Timing refers to the orientation of the oval, in relation to the position of the crank arm. For optimum performance, Absoluteblack have added a small ‘timing’ tab to the 4 and 5 bolt pattern chainrings. This timing tab must be positioned directly behind the crank arm.

Most CX riders choose 38T as most versatile option, as it will suit best someone who uses 37 or 38T chain ring currently. While pedaling, you will feel similar effort to the one riding round 37T ring, but will result in speed similar to riding a 40T chain ring.

The addition of these Absoluteblack CNC machined alloy bolt covers, creates a literal and visual smooth transition from the end of the crank’s spider arms to the outer surface of the chain ring.

Absoluteblack has also release new crank bolt covers for Shimano Dura Ace and Ultegra cranks. Weighing just 13g (including bolts) and available in black, Ultegra grey, or red, they’re the final finishing touch for any Shimano crank equipped with Absoluteblack’s Oval road chain rings. To fit the new bolt covers you must first remove the existing chain ring bolts. With the rings in position on the slider tabs, fit the caps. Ensure the caps fit flush to the face of the chain ring, then use the four new bolts – that come with the covers – to attach the covers. The new Torx T-30 bolts fit from the rear of the chain rings.
