Cannondale Unveils 2014 Synapse Carbon Hi-MOD Endurance Bike

Cannondale recently launched its new 2014 Synapse Carbon Hi-MOD endurance road bike at a press event in Tuscany, Italy. Utilizing the dusty gravel roads of the fabled Strade Bianche WorldTour race, the Connecticut-based bike maker showed off the new steed built up with a BallisTec carbon frame, which helps balance weight, stiffness and strength. The new bike also incorporates re-designed SAVE PLUS technology for improved shock absorption and control.

The top end version Synapse Carbon Hi-MOD Black Inc. with Dura-Ace 9000 will retail for $8,320, while the next tier Hi-MOD 2 SRAM Red will go for $5,500. Both bikes will be available starting in June. There’s also an Ultegra-equipped version in the pipeline for August release, but price is not yet available. “This bike was built with the hard-core enthusiast in mind and encompasses the features he or she needs to take part in any gran fondo, challenging race or epic ride,” said Bob Burbank, global general manager of Cannondale. “We chose the gravel roads of Tuscany for the official unveiling because that type of varied terrain is where this bike was designed to truly excel.”

Cannondale says that the 2014 Synapse Carbon Hi-MOD is lighter, stiffer, stronger and smoother than its predecessor. The BallisTec carbon construction also reduces weight, with 56cm frame coming in at a claimed 950 grams, which is highly respectable within the endurance road bike class.

The enhanced SAVE PLUS technology allows the fork, rear stays, seat tube, and seat post to work together to deliver compliance and intuitive handling. But the most striking visual feature on the new frame is the Power Pyramid seat tube, which splits asymmetrically at the bottom to accommodate a new, wider bottom bracket that increases stiffness without adding weight. The new bike was developed in part with input from Cannondale Pro Cycling riders such as American Ted King and Sagan. Prior to the official launch, some members of the team trained on and raced prototypes of the Synapse Carbon Hi-MOD, providing feedback. And already the bike has proven to be a winner, as Sagan rode his Synapse Carbon Hi-MOD to victories at Belgian’s Gent-Wevelgem semi-classic and the first stage of Three Days of De Panne. Sagan was also second at E3 Harelbeke and the Tour of Flanders.

“During the development process, there is no substitute for having some of the best cyclists in the peloton race the bike and really put it to the test. Cannondale Pro Cycling has had a great spring riding the Synapse Hi-MOD in the early Classics,” said Burbank. “Now, we’re proud to be launching this bike to all cyclists as the ultimate partner for their epic rides.”

Here’s a look at geometry measures, plus a full rundown of key tech specs for the new bike’s top three standard models, plus the top line women’s specific offering. Thus far we’ve seen info for six bikes in total (there are two other women’s models), meaning the new Synapse will come in 11 different frame sizes – six for men, five for women.
