DMT is an Italian brand based out of Verona, Italy who's founder has a long history in cycling shoes even before creating the brand in 1996. Currently, their production is based out of a factory in Bosnia. The DMT factory employs over 1,800 people and they also product sports shoes for Nike. In fact, DMT develops and produces a particular line of soccer shoes for Nike and although the percentage of shoes that DMT creates for Nike is very small, even this small percentage of a brand as big as Nike is still quite large in comparison to the very niche cycling shoe market.
To ensure that quality control is kept to as high a level as if the factory was in Italy, the owner of DMT commutes 300 miles from Verona to Bosnia (300 miles) every week! DMT is also the shoe of choice for none other than Mario Cipollini.
(Check out this highlight video for a detailed look at features of the DMT R1.)
DMT is now distributed in the US by Alé Bike Wear and we got an up close look at the all new 2016 collection that feature a 100% carbon sole, hand crafted quality and their own air flow technology.
DMT R1
The R1 is DMT's top of the line road race model. It features a 100% carbon fiber sole for maximum stiffness and efficiency. The sole has DMT's Aerotech+ air flow technology - a mesh covered vent toward the front of the shoe. The R1 is made to be anatomic, light and breathable with air holes for maximum air flow. The heel is reinforced for a snug, secure fit. There are two Boa closures for easy fit. We did not try these shoes on, but the cut seems to be a bit on the narrow side.
DMT R2
The R2 is a slightly less expensive version of the R1 and features the same Aerotech+ carbon sole. It has only 1 Boa closure and a velcro strap.
DMT R3
The R3 features an upper with panels pieced together versus the single panel construction of the R1. The R3 still has the Aerotech+ carbon sole. It has 1 Boa closure for fitment.
The R4 features a bit different upper with a combination of materials including mesh and uses velcro straps.
DMT R4
The R4 features an upper made from two different materials including mesh for comfort and air flow. The R4 still has the Aerotech+ carbon sole. It eschews the Boa closures for more cost effective velcro straps (3).
DMT T1
The T1 is the triathlon specific shoe from DMT and features no tongue and a rear loop for quick fitting. It has a low profile and one single Boa closure for fitment. The R1 still has the Aerotech+ carbon sole.
DMT R5 Womens
The R5 Womens is designed for the smaller, lighter foot of a woman and the sole is different from the rest of DMT's mens line. The sole on this model is made from nylon and fiber glass for a light but efficient performance oriented shoes. The heel is reinforced for a snug, secure fit and uses one Boa closure.
From the Manufacturer
"The great power of DMT is the production department that is made up of skillful and motivated men and women, a work organization that dates back its roots during the early '80s of the last century.
A few years ago, Philippe Zecchetto, footwear technician and manager, formed a selected team, consisting of the best footwear engineers and artisans, a small world made of fond and painstaking people. With a single purpose: give the best every day in order to produce an unmatchable shoe."
