Don’t kill yourself. Often times if you’re climbing, you’re in the hills with awesome views. Take your time, enjoy yourself.
One way to keep climbing fun is… try not to do long consistent climbs, if you can keep them short. You don’t need to go out and ride Vail pass everyday.
An important part of enjoying your ride is being comfortable on the bike. Having good contact points, having decent bar tape, having a decent saddle, decent shorts, and decent shoes goes a long way.
Essential gear when you’re riding or training for an event are… you’re going to need a tube, a patch kit, you’re going to need to know how to use both of them to change a tire. You’re going to need a pump as well. Carrying some cash, like a $20 bill always helps as well.
It’s hard to get a good fruit drink mix on the road, i.e at gas stations, because of all the high fructose corn syrup. Taking a small zip lock bag of your favorite powder, will allow you to make your own mix on the road if you can find water.
If you’re going to be on the road for an extended amount of time, don’t forget to eat. You’re training your legs, but you’re also training your gut to be able to take in all those calories.
When you’re thinking about food for a long day such as a century ride or any ride you’ll be out for an extended amount of time. Keep in mind variety, don’t go out there with 10 bars the same flavor. Take a variety of different foods and flavors to keep it enjoyable.
