Giro is adding women’s styles to its New Road line of cycling apparel the company launched last year. The baggies-for-the-pavement-style apparel seeks to blend street clothes styling with cycling-specific functionality, according to press materials.
“We took inspiration from athletic and classic sportswear design, with meticulous attention to fabrics, functionality and details that make all the difference when you ride,” said Giro Women’s Senior Apparel Designer Karany Nihm. “The fit is tailored to complement the shape of the body while respecting range of movement—even when layered up—so that each piece can stand on its own, or work as part of a system when the body is in motion.”
Both the men’s and women’s Spring 2014 collection includes a mix-and-match format of base layers, tops, bottoms and outerwear that are developed around three main concepts—Foundation, Ride and Mobility.
The Foundation concept refers to base layers, including tops, shorts and bibs designed for next-to-skin comfort and interior storage solutions.
On top of the Foundation, riders can select from two performance levels, Ride–tops, bottoms and outerwear designed for longer road rides; and Mobility—similar pieces designed for shorter rides and urban use.
“Cycling is going through a period of rapid change, both as a sport and as a cultural movement, and women are leading the charge,” said Greg Shapleigh, Giro Senior Vice President. “With Giro New Road, we have created clothing that shows cycling can inspire performance apparel that connects with athletic apparel and streetwear as well as it does with cycling essentials like helmets and footwear.”
New Road apparel coordinates with other Giro cycling products including helmets, gloves and shoes.
