Mad Fiber’s show piece at Interbike this year was their one off Carbon and Kevlar weaved tubular wheelset. The prototype wheelset is both a practice in materials and aesthetics. Kevlar being lighter than carbon, the mix of Kevlar and Carbon brought the wheels in at at about 10% lighter than normal. The wheels are said to perform and feel just like the full carbon production set.
Mad Fiber also wanted to see what they could do with custom colors and decals. The most striking feature of these wheels is the red color, which is achieved by dying the Kevlar. This opens up the possibility for Mad Fiber to offer the wheelset in a variety of colors down the road. The overwhelmingly positive response to the wheels has already produced a limited run of Mad Fiber clinchers with red decals.
According to Ric Hjertberg, founder of Mad Fiber, the company may do a limited run of the Kevlar wheelsets, but they may try other materials as well before finding the perfect blend.
