Shimano

Shimano has announced a new mounting standard for road disc brakes called flat mount. This new option was developed in cooperation with leading road bike brands as a dedicated "on road" solution, and allows bike manufacturers to move away from the mountain bike technology and looks that have been used up to this point with disc brakes on road bikes.

The result is a cleaner, integrated construction with the frame (no visible mounting bolts), a more direct connection to the frame and better alignment (eliminates stacking adapters), easier tool access for disc caliper adjustment (even inside rear triangle), and backwards compatibility with mountain bike style post mount calipers (with an adapter).

No word yet on when we'll actually see the new concept applied in the real world.
