In his on-going quest to regain the crown of world’s No. 1 stage racer, Spaniard Alberto Contador will head into the 2014 season with a quiver of Specialized race bikes at his disposal. Here’s an in-depth look at his options.

Recently, Contador and the rest of his Tinkoff-Saxo teammates came together in Gran Canaria for the official team launch and a week of hard training. Sadly, we weren’t able to join, but we did manage to track down photos of the bikes Contador and company will be riding this year.

Expect the Tarmac SL4 to be No. 1 on that list. It’s a lightweight and stiff all-arounder that climbs well and accelerates quickly. No. 2 is the Venge, an aero road machine that will see action on flat days. Finally, there is the Roubaix, a bike Tinkoff-Saxo riders will break out for the likes of the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. For a closer look, click through this expansive photo gallery.

Specialized Tarmac SL4

The No. 1 bike of the Tinkoff-Saxo team, the Tarmac SL4 is laterally stiff climbing machine.

Specialized Venge

Designed to handle all conditions but most at home when aerodynamics are key. Features identical components as the Tarmac SL4 team bikes.

Zipp Wheels

The Tinkoff-Saxo riders have their choice of wheels from the Zipp range, which runs from 202s all the way to 808s. Here we see the popular Zipp 404, a solid middle of the road choice that splits the difference between weight, aerodynamics and vulnerability to cross winds.

SRAM Drivetrain

Both the SL4 and Venge feature near-identical build kits. Tinkoff-Saxo will use SRAM Red full 22-speed drivetrains for the coming year.

Headtube

The hourglass shape of the headtube reduces flexing and reduces weight by employing less material.

Seatstays

The Tarmac SL4 has chainstays that are as wide as you can fit without hitting them with your legs. That helps to pair that front-end stiffness with the rear of the bike, which elicits a more controlled ride.

Zipp Components

Zipp Service Course stems, bars and seatposts are spec'd on all the team bikes.

Look Pedals

Tinkoff-Saxo riders use Look’s Keo Blade and Blade Aero pedals. They have an slight aero profile, a large pedaling surface and are very light.

Old Reliable

No hydraulics or electronics, just good old fashioned cable actuated brakes and shifting.

Power Meter

The whole team will use SRM power meters. But not all riders like to see their data, so they’ll keep the head unit in a jersey pocket.

Special Tires

The team will run Specialized's 24mm Turbo tire, which matches up well with the wider rims on the Zipp wheels.

Wider Fork

The fork and headtube are wider, which adds rigidity to the bike, while reducing material and reducing weight.
