Bellwether Coldfront Convertible Long Sleeve Jersey Review

Bellwether's Coldfront Convertible Long Sleeve Jersey has become a part of our regular apparel rotation.

When it comes to wintertime cycling apparel, versatility is key. The best jerseys perform across an array of conditions and temperatures. Bellwether's Coldfront Convertible Long Sleeve Jersey ($130) is just such a garment. During cool weather rides, the wind-blocking 3-layer softshell top provides solid defense against the elements. And if things heat up (be it temperature or pace) the sleeves zip off, leaving you with a sharp-looking short sleeve jersey.

The front of the jersey and sleeves are windproof, providing insulation without adding unwanted bulk. The thermal-knit back panel is breathable to prevent overheating. Additional features include a full-length locking zipper, silicon gripper at the hem, and three rear pockets plus a smaller zipped pocket that provide ample storage and are angled for easy access. There are also reflective accents front and rear to increase rider visibility during low light situations.

On the Road

With winter bearing down on RoadBikeReview's test HQ in Colorado, this jersey has taken a place in our regular apparel rotation. Worn overtop a long sleeve baselayer, it's worked well when temperatures hang in the high 40s or low 50s.

Much warmer than that and we've ditched the baselayer - and sleeves - and worn it in short sleeve mode. Removing the sleeves is an easy process, with just one zipper per sleeve. It's not however something we'd recommend trying while in motion, as it takes a subtle amount of contorting to get the zippers started.

More often, though, we've worn Bellwether's Coldfront Convertible as a mid-layer with a jacket such as the Bellwether Coldfront overtop. Here again the jersey has performed as advertised, keeping us comfortable but not cooking. And ditching the jacket is no problem thanks to the jersey's amply sized center pocket that has plenty of stretch.

A semi-form fit cut is not super snug, but the jersey doesn't flap in the wind either. We just wish the neck line was a little tighter, which would help keep cold air from creeping in. Color options include red, black and white. Sizes range from small to XXL.

Bottom Line

Some will find the $130 price tag a little steep, but considering you're essentially getting two jerseys in one, it's actually pretty reasonable. Combine that with solid on-bike functionality and we have no problem giving Bellwether's Coldfront Convertible Long Sleeve Jersey an enthusiastic thumbs up.
