The Rapha Grand Tour Road Shoe

News Shoes

Rapha today announces its first venture into the performance footwear market with the new Rapha Grand Tour Shoes. Having been developed in partnership with Giro®, the Grand Tour Shoes de- liver the highest performance and finest quality for the discerning cyclist seeking the best in racing and training footwear.

Rapha and Giro believe that the Grand Tour Shoes offer greater durability, comfort and quality than any other shoe on the market. Key features include:

  • A full Yak upper, a first in the cycling industry
  • Easton® unidirectional carbon sole
  • Cork footbed that mold to the shape of the foot
  • Renowned Giro SuperNaturalTM fit with adjustable arch system
  • Machined aluminum buckle with leather straps and titanium D rings
  • Classic, elegant Rapha styling

These shoes are the first to use Yak leather, a soft but highly durable leather specifically developed by specialists Ecco for the Rapha Grand Tour Shoes. Living in central Asia, the Tibetan plateau and in Mongolia, Yaks are beasts of burden, prized by indigenous people for their ability to survive in se- vere weather and barren conditions. Because of this, Yak leather delivers unique benefits to the rider including being lightweight and water resistant, with excellent moisture movement and three times the tensile strength of other bovine leathers. The Yak leather is soft and comfortable straight out of the box but, unlike some other leathers, is strong enough to wear in rather than wear out.

For the Rapha Grand Tour Shoes, this Yak leather has been paired with a full carbon Easton sole. At only 6.5mm thick, the Easton EC90 unidirectional carbon fibre sole has been proven over many thousands of miles on the Giro ProLight SLX and Factor models. It offers class-leading stiffness and an excellent connection to the pedal.

High quality details distinguish the Rapha Grand Tour Shoes. The unique aluminium buckle on the Rapha Grand Tour Shoes has been precision-machined to deliver class leading durability and an excellent strength to weight ratio. The buckle has the craftsmanship and reassuring feel of a luxury car door handle. The shoes are available in white or black, with a striking contrast strap, echoing the toe straps of old and suggesting strength and stability. The Rapha brand is discretely communicated through a stamped Rapha logo on the strap and reflective Rapha logo on the heel.

Since its launch in 2010, the Giro SuperNatural fit system has been widely acclaimed and comfort- ably fits multiple foot shapes and widths. For the Rapha Grand Tour Shoes, the Giro lasts have been used and unique insoles developed that pair moisture wicking fabric with natural cork and PVA, to give a supportive platform that molds to the foot shape over time. Three different arch supports are included. The heel cup area of the shoe is lined with super soft, untreated Yak leather with excellent moisture movement properties.

The Rapha Grand Tour shoes will be available on April 10, 2012 in European sizes 39 to 48 (whole and half with the exception of 47.5) and priced $450 / £350 / €360. The shoes are delivered in individual shoe bags and with after care cream developed specially for Ecco leathers. US made cedar shoe trees are also available separately. The shoes can be purchased exclusively from www.rapha.cc , www.giro.com and select Rapha retail partners.
