Two cyclists stabbed after holiday ride; one in critical condition

By Matt Galnor
An annual Memorial Day bicycle ride landed three men in the hospital — two cyclists who were stabbed and the suspect who’ll be charged in the attack.

One of the cyclists was in critical condition Monday at Shands Jacksonville, said Sgt. Robert Hurst of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Police did not identify any of the three men Monday.

Hurst said police have varying accounts of what happened just before 11 a.m. in the parking lot of Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Kent Campus.

I don’t even live in Jville but from what I read it must be ridiculous. I live near Chattanooga and people are pretty bike friendly. Although I’ve had several incidents like some guy almost running me over at a stop light and when I turned around and looked he said “Sorry I didn’t see you” when I replied ” Its cool man just pay more attention so someone doesn’t get hurt next time” he then thinks hes tough in his car and says “F*** You man you shouldn’t be on the road anyway”. I left it at that because I figure if he’s that ignorant he has more problems than me already.

I love the comments about how bike riders think they own the road. PLEASE tell me how some 150-200 lb person on a 15-20 lb bike traveling 20 mph thinks they own the road. How can this compare to 3k-4k lb vehicle traveling 40 mph. Please see Newtons Law of Motion for outcome!! It drives me mad these people who think this way no matter what age, race, sex or political party. We all have to share the roads whether it be bikes, motorcycles, horses, pedestrians and vehicles. I agree non-motorized traffic should be prohibited on certain roads generally where speed limits exceed 50mph.

I admit nobody is perfect whether it be car or bike but just a little FYI for people who have no respect for bike riders. If you run someone over and they survive their probably gonna sue your butt off. If they don’t how can anyone carry that with them the rest of their life knowing they took someones Mom, Dad, Son, Daughter, etc., etc., etc., because they were in a hurry and couldn’t wait even 20-30 seconds to safely pass someone. Is another life really not worth a few seconds out of your day to be courteous and make sure everyone stays safe on the road?

From what little information stated, if it is indeed established at all as fact, both side escalated the confrontation. If you follow the link to the original article and read the comments, it’s turned into a pure us vs. them fight where no one wins.

What can be said is that if the facts are as stated:

Truck driver hits cyclist with vehicle – accidental or purposefully? Probably the latter but who knows – if motive is shown to be anger he is guilty of assault with a deadly weapon

2nd Cyclist yells at driver – not smart since the other person has a 2 ton weapon but also not illegal

Truck driver follows cyclists – not know if this was because he was pissed (likely from prior actions) or following Fl law to check on the health of the biker he hit (unlikely).

Truck driver again hits biker with chest – aggressive confrontation and stupid but not illegal

3rd Cyclist punches truck driver – stupid and illegal, case could be made he feared for his life but this is conjecture and useless at this point, assault

Truck driver knifes cyclists – illegal, stupid, assault with a deadly weapon, did he fear for his life and act of our self defense? I don’t think so as he strode into a crowd of cyclists and bumped one of them in an aggressive manner. He was trying to provoke a response.
