Tragic news out of Kalamazoo, Michigan. According to a report on WZZM13.com, five cyclists were killed and four others seriously injured when they were struck by a pickup truck Tuesday evening.

In the 30 minutes before the group of riders were struck, law enforcement in three jurisdictions received calls about a blue pickup truck driving erratically, said WZZM13.com. But before officers could track down the truck, the blue Chevrolet pickup slammed into the group of nine riders as they climbed a hill near Kalamazoo County’s Markin Glen Park.

The truck became disabled after striking the bicyclists, and when police arrived, they found a man they believed to be the driver not far away on foot. The man was arrested and remained in police custody Tuesday night. Five people were pronounced dead at the scene. All of the survivors were seriously injured. Officials said they didn’t expect a report from investigators before Thursday, when they will begin to determine what charges to file against the man.

Names of the driver and victims were not released as police were still notifying families. All were adults, who apparently were riding together when they were struck from behind. For more visit www.wzzm13.com. To make a donation to the victims families, go to www.kalamazoostrongorganization.org.

I would prefer the charges to be criminal not traffic. Vehicular manslaughter sentences vary by state but are not even close to second degree homicide or aggravated manslaughter. Aggravated means a weapon was used, like a pickup truck.
